unfortunately YA is where the money is 😔 (or was? idk maybe it's adult romantasy now, i don't pay attention to publishing as much anymore)

but omg the roku book is even worse than you think. it's not just bad bc roku sucks, it's 'how did anyone think this was good enough to publish' bad to me...... with some Worse Than Usual takes on colonialism

it's honestly been so long, i don't really remember but i think at least a little? but mostly implied in what we know of kuruk, tbh.
i enjoyed the politicking! i liked the depth it added to avatar but i think i came out of the book wishing that fc yee would write adult fiction instead tbh.

oh caveat on she who became the sun: i haven't read the sequel yet, so idk how that holds up

if you're chill with atla and YA, the kyoshi novels by fc yee are genuinely excellent.
honorable mentions: anything by nghi vo or zen cho. most of their books don't completely fit all these requirements but it might be worth checking out their books to see if anything sparks any interest.

light from uncommon stars by ryka aoki (cw for depictions of transmisogyny but it's a very tender kind of book)
she who became the sun by shelley parker-chan (idr it feeling too dark but people say it is so ymmv with this one)

It contains sketches of (shippy) fanart for fandoms like Digimon, Zero Escape, and Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint, as well as original art from my own personal projects. I added a little bit of commentary because I like to yap sometimes.
