HEY EVERYONE REMEMBER WHEN TRUMP WAS IMPEACHED FOR DENYING AID TO UKRAINE BECAUSE HE WANTED ZELENSKY TO LIE AND SAY BAD THINGS ABOUT BIDEN AND ZELENKSY WOULDN’T DO IT? Maybe literally one fucking American newspapers could mention this in their, “think pieces,” about what happened yesterday.

Every news outlet reporting Elon Musk's comment about accidentally canceling Ebola prevention efforts and quickly restoring them should also say they haven't been restored, they're still canceled, the outbreak-fighting teams are dismantled, the money is gone www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...

Windsor Street, home to the Ukraine consulate in Edinburgh, unofficially renamed:

Keep thinking about how President Hacha was forced to wait until 01:15am as Hitler finished watching a film before demanding complete submission from Czechoslovakia. You can’t erase that kind of depravity, or ignore what it means. These people are out for blood.

The monstrous injustice of two men entirely insulated from the consequences of their actions baiting the person who has to confront them every day on live television feels like a whole new grade of performative cruelty.

I’m not normally a BBC basher but it’s *still* referring to what happened in the White House yesterday as a “shouting match”, a “ spat” and a “row”. We all watched it. That’s not an accurate depiction of events.

I passed my PhD with no corrections today (and was also awarded some free jam).

This cover is bananas. It looks like an ad for the book the author wrote about another author who is not the father mentioned in the subtitle and either could be the man in the photo as both look very similar and both bear a CANCELLED stamp but neither are Bailey whose name appears TWICE. It’s camp!

Pretty depressing that in this, America’s new Age of Oligarchs, Bezos is the smart one but still this self-serving pap is the best he can do.

day 12 in the basement of "big pink". dylan and the band are continuing to rehearse "you ain't going nowhere". on take 4 or 5, they pause for a breather, and rick danko announces he's going to big sainsbury's. does anybody want anything

As Sir Keir Starmer boosts UK defence spending, how far is Britain from battle-readiness? What’s needed? How to procure it? More collabs with EU allies? What to learn from Ukraine and Russia? I made ‘Re-arming the UK’, for @BBCRadio4, now on @BBCSounds www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m...

Pundits: "If the press stands in solidarity with the AP and boycotts the White House, the only media left covering it will be Fox, Newsmax and Breitbart." White House: "We have determined that the only media we will allow to cover us is Fox, Newsmax and Breitbart."

See, we figured the way to solve climate change was to give loads of subsidy to this one guy to make electric cars, so now the guy is richer than Zeus but nobody wants to buy the cars because he's a Nazi. Does anyone have any new ideas

What makes a great op-ed? Asking on behalf of some journalism students who maybe aren’t too familiar with the format, but certainly have things they want to say about the world …

lol

Around 400,000 people work in universities across the UK, and more then 200,000 of them are academics. The closures and job losses we’re seeing in the sector just now are a major industrial crises affecting the key workplaces and economic drivers of hundreds of towns and cities.

Just dreadful people on almost every level. (I see no reason to doubt the Post’s reporting.)

Roses are red Violets have stems What rough beast slouches towards Bethlehem?

Just switched on the Radio 4 to hear @adamfleming.bsky.social describe the historic achievement of a South Asian PM as ‘just one data point’ in a debate about a sign - kinda frightening to hear the dog whistle discourse of GB News echoed on mainstream channels.

You can ignore climate change. The political system can ignore climate change. But the insurance industry cannot ignore climate change.

We might yearn for paradise, temporal or spiritual. But to our descendents our habitable planet will look like an almost unimaginable paradise. No tech fantasy, no space station or controlled environment will ever compare. Fight for what we have. This is our heaven, and there can be no other.

This is just one of the ways in which climate change will erode our standards of living, and why treating the environment as a barrier to economic growth is extremely short sighted. bsky.app/profile/theg...

"This is the disaster of the the Starmer administration so far - preemptively absorbing the most simplistic account of conventional economics, so as to endlessly signal their conformity to what they imagine the lowest common denominator of conservative financial opinion to be..." - Adam Tooze

ICYMI - me in last week's Sunday National on the importance of radical folk traditions in a time of growing disruption and neo-fascism. www.thenational.scot/culture/2490...

The tech bro brownshirts will continue to liquidate the federal government up to the point that it impacts on property - that’s the red line and I expect Musk knows this. It’s also why Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have barely been mentioned.

Some writing in today's @scotnational.bsky.social about vibrant and properly funded folk culture as a radical response to neo-fascism www.thenational.scot/culture/2490...

⚠️ Alert for Lewis Grassic Gibbon fans. BBC4 is rerunning two programmes on Wednesday (5 Feb.). First, at 9 pm, The Land of Lewis Grassic Gibbon, a film from 1971. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m...

Always feel a bit like a sad bison in a safari park when wandering the streets of central Edinburgh these days.

Do you go to the theatre? Do you care about Palestinian art and culture? Do you want the Edinburgh Fringe to be an internationalist platform where Palestinan artists can be seen and celebrated? Then give these people your money, they need it! www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/welcome-to...

Jennings: This salute trutherism is outrageous.  Rampell: Do it right now on TV! If you think it’s a normal way to greet people, do it right now on TV. Why won’t you?!

Depressing that two brilliant, beloved, and impactful TV dramas showcasing British history (Wolf Hall and Mr Bates Versus The Post Office) were only made because the cast and crew volunteered to take big pay cuts If a big streamer isn’t interested, UK dramas are becoming unaffordable

The Castlebridge colliery banner exemplifies the place Burns has occupied in the Scottish labour movement as a people's poet. Burns in this image is a lasting, powerful and emotive figure whose words convey an enduring democratic and egalitarian message.

First canary down the Supreme Court mine under Trump II. If Trump wins, hard to imagine him losing much else.

Extreme concentrations of wealth elevate deeply unserious people - who learn to perform their privilege through vindictive silliness and mocking pastiche. The behaviour of people insulated at birth from the consequences of their actions. It’s Versailles with crypto, nukes and memes.

News filtering through of yet another round of (300) redundancies at Newcastle University, and talk of an end to most research time that isn't externally funded. The jobs massacre just rolls on and on and on. Will get worse and worse at most universities.

See when we had the Arches, it was a space in the city centre with multiple rehearsal rooms where someone who had never made a professional show in their life could email the office and ask to book in for like a week, and get it no bother, and come in and make a theatre show in there for free
