⚡ @simonforstroud.bsky.social was one of only a handful of people to complete the BBC Radio Gloucestershire Buzz Wire Challenge in Uley on Bank Holiday Monday. He puts it down to "the steady hand of the surgeon".

1/2 May Day in Stroud and delighted to support local striking phlebotomists, doing skilled and essential work on a minimal wage. I spoke about the need to learn the lessons of this week’s vote, and return to our Labour roots.

1/3 The first thing is to congratulate everyone who was elected today, and thank those who run the elections. I wish the successful candidates all the best. Gloucestershire is a wonderful place to live & we do best when we celebrate the diversity of the district and our inclusive approach to life.

🚨 This week marks 6 years since Parliament declared a climate emergency. 📜 We need a new law with binding targets—like the #CANBill —to drive real change. 🌿 I’ve signed EDM 1184 urging the Gov to debate it further. 📝 Ask your MP to sign: edm.parliament.uk/early-day-mo... @zero-hour.bsky.social

Up in a sunny Runcorn today supporting Labour's excellent candidate - @cllrkarenshore.bsky.social - alongside @karinsmythmp.bsky.social, @simonforstroud.bsky.social and @johnslingermp.bsky.social 🌤️

I hope that everyone has a happy Easter, with the opportunity to spend time with family, friends and loved ones. This is a stained glass window of the crucifixion in Selsley Church, designed by Ford Madox Brown, and made by the William Morris Company. It’s a wonderful piece of Pre-Raphaelite art.

Before getting the train to London and help save British Steel, I couldn’t help noticing the queue outside Sounds Records. We have two of the best record shops in the country and Stroud and I’m delighted that they are supported on days like today (and hopefully every day). #RecordStoreDay

The impact of the US's global tariffs will be concerning to businesses in Stroud. These tariffs will risk jobs and livelihoods. A measured approach is crucial to safeguard people's economic security. I urge Stroud businesses to share their views on potential UK measures in response to these tariffs.

Stroud’s Salt Bakery’s had a new raspberry and custard croissant available this morning. Somebody had to try it…

This morning’s Desert Island Discs featured the remarkable Donna Ockenden. A reminder, if we needed it, of the importance and difference midwives can make - to babies, mothers, and society. Really worth a listen. www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/...

Amazing news! I’ve been campaigning hard with parliamentary colleagues and Mary Colwell to get climate and nature embedded in the curriculum. In a world reeling from the effects of climate change, it’s so important to educate the next generation in how to look after our natural world.

This is really good news. The NHS is beginning to get back on its feet. There’s a long way to go. The government has helped, but this is primarily due to the hard work of all those within the NHS locally. Thank you.

I spoke about the Pathways to Work Green Paper on ITV news this evening. It’s a mixed bag. There are some good bits to it… but if people are being made poorer and forced to use the foodbank more, I’m not going to support that.

Under Labour, in 2010, NHS waiting lists were 2.5 million. By last summer, after 14 years of Tory misrule, they had trebled to 7.62 million. It's going to be a long haul, but it's great to see them steadily decreasing again. An efficient NHS is good for our health, our society and our economy.

I strongly recommend early to bed tonight so you can be up bright and perky to enjoy Politics West on BBC1 tomorrow morning. Danny Kruger, Sarah Dyke and me talking through some of the issues of the week.

So pleased to see my professional body - Royal College of GPs - drop its opposition to assisted dying. It follows in the footsteps of every medical Royal College and the BMA. It is right that a range of views are heard and respected, just as they are in medical practice. 1/3

In 2012, the Conservatives created NHS England, adding costly bureaucracy and duplicating work with the Department of Health. Abolishing it will free up doctors to reduce waiting times, save millions, and restore democratic control, ensuring the NHS remains free for all.

Curlews are beautiful and important birds - but in Gloucestershire only 2 curlew chicks fledged last year. I support #worldcurlewday on April 21st. Read about the @curlewaction.bsky.social's plans to raise money to create a beautiful mural in Stroud. www.curlewaction.org/curlew-mural...

Thanks to @yasminqureshimp.bsky.social & @simonforstroud.bsky.social for co-chairing today's event of the APPG for Dentistry and Oral Health on how best to deliver the 700k urgent appointments. You are right: this is "a 1st step along a very long road" as we work to end the crisis in NHS dentistry.

It was great to talk to Alex and Alyssa from @amplifystroud.com about all things Westminster. We spoke about my priorities for Stroud, how to navigate the labyrinthine network of corridors on the parliamentary estate, and my work on the End of Life Bill.

What a difference a day makes. #standwithukraine #slavaukraini

The new GP contract is good news, but there is still a long way to go to get things back on track. I talked to ministers about what I think the priorities should be and am happy that this will help us get back to the family GP we all want to see. www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news...

Anneliese Dodds is a thoroughly decent person. I share her concerns about reducing the overseas aid budget. A Labour government should be better than this.

Assisted dying is not new ground in healthcare - it's an extension of person-centred care at the end of life and is tried-and-tested in places like Australia and the US. 🧵

4 Stroud schools will be among the first to offer new government-funded, free breakfast clubs. I'm organising a roundtable of local leaders and charities to understand the ways in which we can provide healthy, sustainable, and locally sourced food for breakfast clubs.

I popped in to the community support event at the Uplands Community Hub at the All Saints Community Centre today. Fascinating to see how the area has changed over the years. Photo with Lucy Thwaite, one of the organising team, who have done such great work . Thanks to everyone involved 🙌

1 in 5 adults are on antidepressants. Comedy & laughter could help lower our reliance on pills to treat mild/moderate depression. Comedy hasn't been done before in the social prescribing field. Craic Health is trialling the scheme. Read about it here: www.stroudnewsandjournal.co.uk/news/nationa...

With 23 colleagues I've written to the Minister for School Standards asking for a meeting to discuss the status of the Natural History GCSE. It will help inspire young people to engage with the natural world and equip them with knowledge & skills to help address some of the challenges we face.

I am one of 62 MPs and Peers urging the Business Secretary to act on the ICJ’s recommendation to halt UK imports from Israel’s illegal settlements. This would align UK trade policy with our human rights commitments and signal that Israel’s serious human rights violations will not go unchallenged

People are not illegal. The problems in our society are not caused by immigrants but by politicians. Those who come here seeking safety go on to enrich our communities, support our economy, and strengthen our public services. I am proud of Stroud’s long tradition of welcoming refugees.

No one should face insecurity at work. Zero-hours contracts, fire & rehire and poverty pay must end. I’m backing Labour’s New Deal for Working People, which could deliver the biggest boost to workers’ rights in a generation. Standing with trade unions to fight for fairness at work #HeartUnions

I've joined 68 MPs and Peers urging the Government to condemn President Trump's Gaza plan. It threatens regional peace and breaches international law, including our duty to prevent war crimes. The Government must take all possible steps to stop its implementation.

Speaking to Lewis Goodall on @lbc.co.uk this morning about the overprescription of anti-depressants. Listen below 👇 11:10:45

I have written to David Lammy asking how his department plans to respond to the US state department issuing a halt to nearly all existing foreign assistance and pausing new aid. www.ft.com/.../59e008d2...
