President Emmanuel Macron will host another mini-summit on Ukraine at the Elysée Palace today for countries – ranging from Canada to Luxembourg – to consider how America’s allies should respond to Donald Trump’s unilateral negotiations with Moscow. 1/

Wow - great news for the UK’s National Poetry Centre, based in Leeds. Congratulations to Director @nickbarley.bsky.social for what must have been a huge funding challenge. www.nationalpoetrycentre.org.uk/national-poe...

Not (just) for that reason but anyway. www.cityam.com/america-firs...

It’s crazy to think this county was more tolerant of the differences among us 50 years ago than it is today.

This is an excellent (long) read by @thomaszimmer.bsky.social on Russell Vought, one of the few people in the Trump 2.0 administration that actually matters (and is largely ignored in the media).

Third umpire… MI v DC in WIPL..

42 hours later. No more “Europe and the US must be fully united”.

None of my business but I found this scene demoralising. It would be so good if political life in the US could create a democratic politics of irreconcilable differences. Instead: the familiar face (all round) of affirming one voice - and where the only alternative is holding one’s nose to “vote”.

This is very good by @gideonrachman.bsky.social on the new age of “neoimperialism” on.ft.com/3EsorTC

Sooo… Looks like this is happening tonight. That counter is going to tick over 100,000 🔥 Keep signing —> petition.parliament.uk/petitions/70...

Supposing all this targeted word banning is carried out, it does seem to be a pretty weak strategy. I mean - there are loads of words left. At the LSE a lot of the important DEI work is carried out under the banner of “educate for global impact”. You see - you can even use their words.

More than 50% of the public now think Brexit was "Wrong", and the gap between whose who think it was "Wrong" vs. "Right" is now 25%. => the room for manoeuvre in their "reset" of the UK's relationship with the EU is probably larger than Starmer & co. think

Really not far to go now. Link —> petition.parliament.uk/petitions/70...

Wonderfully ambitious essay by Yuk Hui on the beyond puzzling question of “what-the-fuck-is-happening” in our time. His appeal to reason in history -and to Hegel- seems to me a dead end. But you have to get an anchor somewhere. Or at least look for one. He’s looking. www.e-flux.com/journal/151/...

England vs France - what an absolute screamer. (Rugby)

Hard to imagine we will not soon see a Trump spaff at American university authorities and university autonomy. The question is how far it will go beyond the cases where, as Butler puts it here, “the outrageous claim is its own accomplishment”. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

In 2022, Peter Thiel's "house philosopher" envisioned a second Trump administration led by a "CEO" who would be tasked with destroying the government. He wrote down a blueprint. Welcome to the New Reality. www.thenerdreich.com/reboot-elon-...

Philosophical and religious demands for meaning mistake the disease's symptom for its cure. There is no meaning or any need for meaning. The craving for meaning arises from boredom, its illusory possession from valorizing end over means, content over form, lyric over music, narrative over rhythm.

Big news - first UK/EU summit will be 19 May in London

Anjali Joseph has arrived at bsky!

The ICC under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup was gripping early morning viewing in the UK. In the end India were head and shoulders above any other team and worthy winners. I’m gonna miss this. www.bbc.com/sport/cricke...

Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves claim to be looking everywhere for opportunities for growth but are ignoring the solution right under their noses. A new UK-EU Customs Union would turbocharge our economy, tearing down the trade barriers holding British businesses back.

Thought provoking essay on long run historical structures and “inflexion points” where there is a rapid world transforming turn of events. David Motadel asks whether this where we are today.
