It is conceived that way anywhere it is conceived as part of the production process - a commodity among others but the only one that creates value. Sraffa rejects that.

Who knows. It always struck me as a plausible critique of labour theories of value hitherto: labour is conceived there as part of the means of production. (Sraffa thought wages as the same as feed for animals btw.)

And according to Sraffa they all suffer from the same indecision on whether labour is an element within the production process (part of the means of production along with the iron, wheat and pigs) or the whole process. Sraffa was the first, I think, to hold to the idea that it is the latter.

That’s a dark truth if true - but is it? I think a different point, doubtless in the vicinity, is that they feel their society has been changed without their consent. It belongs with a general sense that their views don’t count. Brexit was a striking case where they could make themselves heard.

Not sure what you mean, but the plans referred to in the press release include “a 250-seat performance theatre, bookshop, library, café, offices, recording facilities, rehearsal spaces, study rooms and more”. Are you concerned that the “and more” would include general renovation work?

I wish I could believe this. A bail “lighting up” has been, I think, intended as a reasonable alternative to a visual assessment that a bail has been “fully dislodged” - not a way of establishing it. www.espncricinfo.com/story/wpl-20...

No one (singular) or no one (nobody) yet? Isn’t GR’s idea that it might be the former? A variation of the old European ‘balance of powers’. (It is Spengler’s question at the start of ‘The Hour of Decision’ btw - He doesn’t answer it: Maybe no one (singular), maybe a sequence of short-lived powers.)

Fair enough but his focus is on the possible (likely?) emergence of a new three-way division of spheres of influence. The question who will rule in the imperium mundi in the years to come is: a gang of three - China, Russia, the US. (Europe, which created a global condition, becomes a museum.)

The hip hop thing is from August 2024, and is intended as an example of anticipatory obedience. It’s not quite that but the point is a good one and the cited 1967 Kalven report could not put it better. No neutrality is possible where university interests and values are themselves at stake.

A relation in the form of some kind of political telos? I wonder when what you represent as the Universal appeared as a possible 'End' - and how long that lasted? Post-War reconstruction and Post-Wall hope will have given it speed. But, for reasons you spell out, it could not long survive.

In 1916 Spengler anticipated the collapse of our democratic modernity, and the dawning of a new age of Caesarism. Adorno later declared that ‘the course of world history has vindicated his prognoses' and that though forgotten he is 'threatening to be right.' At inflection points we wake up to this.

A note on the reception of the “decline” idea: many who claimed to take it seriously - that is they “agreed”, with tears, that so many great things have been lost - would then immediately affirm the good news that we have now turned a corner or can yet turn a corner and get back on a progress track.

You note that Universal Scandinavia is not an ideal limited to the left (and not all the left either). How does the idea of heading towards this ideal compare to Kojeve’s (and Fukuyama’s post-Wall inherited) claim that we are moving towards a Hegelian ideal of the universal homogeneous state?
