Delighted to announce the updated national Candidozyma auris (Candida auris) guidance (for healthcare settings in England) is now available: gov.uk/government/p... A summary of recommendations provides a concise overview of the guidance to support adoption and implementation across acute healthcare

Trying out dplyr::consecutive_id() for a project today. #rstats It generates a unique identifier that increments every time a variable (or combination of variables) changes.

Beautiful sunny day means a beautiful curve on my #pv.

I would really like someone central in NHSE or DHSC to own and publish a list of tools that call themselves AI and their certification/approvals. e.g. I want to see at a glance from a trusted source if someone's tool has had proper medical device certification, where data are stored, etc.

Sounds like a fascinating issue

Reading Hannah Aremdt's 'The origins of totalitarianism'. So many quotable sections, but this really stood out today: "Before mass leaders seize the power to fit reality to their lies, their propaganda is marked by its extreme contempt for facts as such, for in their opinion fact depends entirely

📢ANALYSIS: UK emissions fell 3.6% in 2024 to lowest since 1872 🏭Coal lowest since 1666, when Great Fire ravaged London 🚗EVs pushed oil down despite more traffic, saving £1.7bn 🌇Gas down on "cleanest ever" power 📈📉Since 1990, CO2 -54% / GDP +84% www.carbonbrief.org/... 1/9

Tolerance of fascism is also political.

In England, people from ethnic minorities or living in more deprived areas are disproportionately affected by bloodstream infections. We've shown this with our latest study, just been published on @eurosurveillance.org. A thread 👇🏼

We just published analysis that in England ethnicity and socioeconomic deprivation are associated with a higher risk of acquiring blood-stream infections caused by E. coli, K. pneumoniae, P. aeruginosa, and MSSA/MRSA - now we must redress that imbalance www.eurosurveillance.org/content/10.2...

Fully embracing my 'heat pump dad' persona, I wrote a thing. I used the OctopusR #rstats package to analyze my electricity use and pick the optimum tariff from @octopus.energy. It was a lot of fun. #ashp #solarpv simonthelwall.github.io/elec_tariff/...

odbc 1.6.0 is now on #rstats CRAN! Includes a new helper for Redshift, a hex sticker (finally!), and many QOL improvements for Databricks, Snowflake, MSSQL, etc. Read more: odbc.r-dbi.org/news/index.h...

Cross-posting from Mastodon because "what is EuropePMC comprised of?" is important to understand apropos the now resolved DNS issues with PubMed. europepmc.org/Help#epmccon...

I was hoping this would not be an entirely serious post. 😮

Those dreaded sounds on an English train: "Ladies and gentlemen, I'm sorry to announce" fzzzz "and that " bzzz, crackle, mouse noises, "power lines" whispering into a tin can, "until further notice. Thank you"

Has anyone ever done survival analysis on cabinet members? Could be fun; look at whether daily risk of resignation varies according to party or over time.

Sounds amazing

#rstats quarto tip. If you have a project with both renv and a .qmd file in the same folder, then you'll like get an obscure error when you try to render the qmd. Easy fix is to move the .and file to a sub-folder (which is probably where it should be anyway) and render from there.

Great, I was running short of things that would cause me nightmares.

Should be an excellent package

Sunny and mild day here means that we've fully charged house batteries and we're currently exporting 2.5kW to the grid. I think this is the first day this year. #pv is great and the size of your solar array should be a bigger status symbol than your car.

Mossy macro shot from the garden.

First experiments with #rstats package for interacting with the @octopus.energy API. This is my mean export in kWh per hour for calendar year 2024. PKG: github.com/Moohan/octop... Nice write up of the API: www.guylipman.com/octopus/api_...

ChatGPT and other LLMs are not reasoning tools and thus can't be useful for reviewing scientific studies, right? Or have I missed something?

Have to say, I'm not sure I would fit that light blue curve to the dark blue data. Maybe there's data to the left that have been cut off.

Interesting paper on changes in life expectancy in Europe. With cardiovascular disease identified as a major risk factor it will be interesting to see how the trends change as Semaglutide and other drugs increase in use. www.thelancet.com/journals/lan...

Attempted some wildlife photography from my kitchen window. Behold the absence of a blue tit

@ukhsa now on bsky! About time!

UK biostats people, a colleague is looking for a short course on Bayesian statistics. Do you know of any running this year?

Interesting, does this also happen with other bacterial species? And do human diabetics with tight glycemic control get fewer arm infections than human diabetics without tight glycemic control?

Fascinating thread
