Greta Thunberg on why it’s essential for climate activists to speak out on Gaza: "The reason I am a climate activist is not because I want to protect trees. I'm a climate activist because I care about human, planetary well-being and those are extremely interlinked."

You know what was an awesome abundance agenda? The Green New Deal.

The silence remains deafening.

"Women are PIs on 58% of the canceled grants, although they are PIs on only 34% of all active NSF grants. Similarly, Blacks are PIs on 17% of the terminated grants, although they make only 4% of the total pool. Hispanic PIs and those with disabilities were twice as likely to lose a grant."

Today, House Republicans are unveiling their plan to increase energy bills and pollution for everyday Americans, just to give billionaires another tax break. A summary of their proposals. THREAD! 🧵

1. After getting some further insight into changes at NSF (thanks to those who reached out), I deleted a previous post where I tried to make sense of Cheatham's memo as reported in the Science story below.

🧪 Ranking member Lofgren and 11 other House dems sent a fiery 7-page letter to acting NSF director today "The cancelation of these awards suggests instead that NSF is willing to apply political censorship of awards under direction from President Trump and the DOGE teenagers" Share widely #SaveNSF

It's funny how some folks won't support industrial actions ("strikes") when their department/institution isn't being directly affected...but will be out the door, with placards and raised voices, when they feel their wellbeing is being immediately impacted. Cross-sector solidarity means something.

Government overreach and political interference endanger all of academia and society, not just to singular, elite institutions. While 600+ institutions publicly stand together, it's exceedingly disappointing that certain institutions *cough cough* have not signed on. www.aacu.org/newsroom/a-c...

I think a lot about what Carl Sagan said in one of his final interviews.

Powerful remarks from Justice KBJ last night. There was tremendous appreciation and gratitude in the room for her willingness to speak to this important issue so candidly and forcefully. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/01/u...

Trump proposes unprecedented budget cuts for US science in next fiscal year NASA cut by 24% NIH cut by 40% EPA cut by 55% NSF cut by 56% Analysis from @maxkozlov.bsky.social @dangaristo.bsky.social @alexwitze.bsky.social and @nature.com team www.nature.com/articles/d41...

My piece in @rollingstone.com 👇

Say it louder for the folks in the back. NASA’s annual call for grant proposals is now 68 days late.

It's really personal for him. The 2000 election was a major step on the path to getting us here.

All these people who swore that they “will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic” aren’t doing a very good job.

“Never have we so hurt and mistreated our common home as we have in the last two hundred years. Reducing greenhouse gases requires honesty, courage and responsibility. Those who will have to suffer the consequences will not forget this failure of conscience and responsibility.” — Pope Francis

This statement from the NSF is insane. Science is, in essence, designed to separate the true from the false. Understanding how falsehoods spread is key to the scientific endeavor. It is not a violation of free speech to be proven wrong.

Holy shit. The National Science Foundation (NSF) has halted the awarding of previously approved proposals to ensure compliance with presidential directives following the arrival of DOGE at the science funding agency.

Pres. Trump just unilaterally implemented what will likely become the biggest tax hike on Americans since World War II. U.S. consumers in all 50 states will have to pay more for Trump’s national sales tax.

Holy shit. I don’t think I’m exaggerating when I say they’re trying to kill us all. “The Environmental Protection Agency plans to eliminate its scientific research arm, firing as many as 1,155 chemists, biologists, toxicologists and other scientists”

Tonight, 217 Republicans voted to betray the needs of ordinary Americans by shoveling over $1 trillion in tax giveaways to the richest 1%. Instead of working to lower costs, Republicans are charging full steam ahead to abandon their constituents and cut health care and nutrition programs.

"Make them outlaw you, we will stand up with you, I will get arrested with you"

Firings are happening right now at the National Science Foundation. Essential staff are being cut. This isn’t about the budget. If it was, they’d be going after the military (17%) or state appropriations (38%). NSF is 0.7% of the federal budget. All federal employees make up only 4% of the budget.

This is a fabulous piece about kindness and education, by emareena x danielles. A timely reminder that kindness nourishes change traumaresponsive.substack.com/p/kindness-e...

Welcome to the Bluesky account for Stand Up for Science 2025! Keep an eye on this space for updates, event information, and ways to get involved. We can't wait to see everyone #standupforscience2025 on March 7th, both in DC and locations nationwide! #scienceforall #sciencenotsilence

I am a scientist, in large part, because of an REU experience that changed the course of my college experience. I dropped my pre-med focus once I realized what grad school was and how it could open doors to careers I didn’t know existed. This would be a massive loss to STEM workforce development.

Don’t know if anyone else read the letter and caught that it contradicts the majority opinion in SFFA, which allows discussion of racial identities in essays to be used as a factor in admissions. They’re trying to rewrite an already very conservative SCOTUS opinion www.ed.gov/media/docume...

soon enough, the mere presence of black and latino students on campus will be illegal racial discrimination against white students www.insidehighered.com/news/diversi...

The main DEI page from @agu.org has been modified to take diversity out of the title. Glad to see it's not deleted entirely, but hey AGU, we're watching what you do and remembering the big game you once talked about supporting your diverse membership. Today vs. January

“Why do I need NOAA? I’ve got a weather app.” Is equivalent to asking “Why do I need farms? I can go to the supermarket.” www.noaa.gov/about-our-ag...

Although NOAA's page on atmospheric CO2 levels has vanished, you can still get this vital information from Ralph Keeling's team at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego keelingcurve.ucsd.edu Please follow bsky.app/profile/keel... for updates and share Don't let science be hidden

The most iconic figure in the environmental sciences is the Keeling Curve, the CO₂ record from Mauna Loa, Hawaii. @noaa.gov had a wonderful site where you could visualize and download these data, and now it's just gone. These data belong to us and we should not let this happen!

Sabotage. Criminal sabotage. "[The NSF] is planning to lay off between a quarter and a half of its staff in the next two months, a top National Science Foundation official said Tuesday." www.eenews.net/articles/sci...

January 2025 was quite unexpectedly the warmest January on record at 1.75C above preindustrial, beating the prior record set in 2024. This is despite the presence of La Niña conditions in the tropical Pacific, with the El Niño event of 2023/2024 long faded. www.theclimatebrink....

When I was a Hill staffer in 2009, a Dem trifecta was trying to pass universal healthcare. In response, Senate GOP released a memo detailing all of the tactics they in the minority could use to delay the effort as much as possible. I'm recirculating that 2009 GOP memo here. Take inspiration from it.

I said I would do this last night but I was too tired so lets do it today. A few caveats - not saying this list is exhaustive, it's just a good place to start. It's also not in chronological order because I'm a chaos gremlin

That’s not the headline for the top story today! Who cares what he “favors”?! The NYT should be shouting in all caps about how badly this will hurt everyone. Stop burying every single lead during this crisis.

This is an argument for civil disobedience, not against it.

Book burning? If everything was digital in Hitler's 1930s Germany, this is what his book burning would have looked like: deletion of data, removal of websites, retraction of scientific studies, censorship of words like "equity," "diversity," "climate change."

Maybe give them a call…

Really appreciate Jonathan Lambert pointing out that NSF grants are congressionally mandated to weigh how grants broaden participation in science, putting the administration's executive order against DEIA in conflict with, and potentially undermining, congressional legislation

This week solidified my belief that students often need us to pause and engage with them about the world beyond our classroom. They deserve our full humanity. That alone certainly won’t stop fascism, genocide, or the climate crises, but being cared for and seen changes what education means.

I am begging the national media to start taking this seriously. Stop buying the claims that the framing of "temporary" or "pause." They are altering the review processes of federally funded scientific research from merit-based peer review processes to political screening by ideologues.

😩😩😩 www.npr.org/sections/sho...

This is the shape of the crisis: to prevent cataclysmic climate breakdown, we have to RADICALLY cut carbon pollution at a completely unprecedented rate. All prior climate policy has failed. Any university without a massive, cross-disciplinary program to inform this task is part of the problem.

physics of climate impacts 101: - Stuff gets hot (worse heatwaves) - Hot air holds more water vapor (heavier rainfall) - Hot air is thirstier air (higher drought risk) - Warm water is hurricane food (stronger storms) - Hot water expands and hot ice melts (sea level rise)
