But look at the Disney stuff. There is some new material there for sure. But they are pretty clearly trying to recreate the magic of the animated stories instead of telling it in new ways

Star Trek as an example - lower decks gets way more wacky and zany with the material. It's still fundamentally a star Trek story but they take advantage of it being animation to tell some of the more fantastical sides of the world that they couldn't effectively do with TV sets

That's all well and good if these remakes weren't appealing to the nostalgia people have for those animations - reusing characters, songs, etc. it is pretty transparent. I don't disagree with your premise but I don't think it applies here
