I'm yet to meet a Columbo fan who isn't a decent person.

Second season not too far away!

But. For anyone who loves the concept of Colombo but feels icky about him being the police, there's always Poker Face.

I absolutely adore Columbo. He does occasionally engage in ethically dubious ruses to catch his prey {like the episode with the horse racing and the mafia} but you can't imagine him swearing an innocent teen for fifteen hours to induce a false confession.

Another great read, thanks for the link! Gremlins 2 is unironically one of my favourite films of all time, so I really enjoyed the references to Mogwai. :)

The Bitten series by Kelly Armstrong was pretty good for this, though it was more of a found family.

Let's not use masturbating as a pejorative, though? Unless maybe it's in reference to intellectual masturbation. The Nazism is an issue though.

I once requested "anything by Steely Dan" at a uni disco. He said he'd only play it if we could tell him what the band was named after. My friend knew, so he had to play a track. He picked East St Louis Toodle-oo. It's a fine track but I'd been expecting something with lyrics!

An excellent song! I think my favourite Steely Dan number m might be Haitian Divorce. Or Dirty Work. Or Pretzel Logic.

You mean the Goésst Bludds?
I had the opposite experience the other day from a friend who has listened to the audio books. Apparently Shallan is pronounced shall-on? Adolin is Ay-doll-inn!? Mind blown.

I had to file a thumbs up reaction email on a client file earlier...

It's a great series.

My experience as a kid was playing Kentucky Derby on the Sharp MZ700 and learning that no matter how much money your start with, you always end up with less. Put me off gambling for life.
comment in response to

It feels to me like blind bags, gacha machines, booster packs and loot boxes are a gateway drug designed to hook people on the exact same reward pathways that gambling tickles, and they're targeted at children.

Mm, I was watching a YouTuber talking about the rise of US online gambling recently.
I feel like selling gambling is the purest form of capitalism, paying money for literally nothing (on average).
Mind you, WotC has been encouraging gambling for decades with Magic and other CCGs.

Haven't there been slot machines based on Hasbro products forever? Or is the issue here that the product will be a virtual slot machine and thus all the issues with online gambling etc ?

I blocked the OP because they were arguing in bad faith and from their profile they are a right-wing provocateur, but I do think it's interesting to consider the boundaries of fan fiction. Bit of a 'No True Scotsman' situation; cf how literature with SF tropes tries very hard to avoid the SF label.

I mean there's tons of it. Arguably "Strange New Worlds" is Trek fan fic. Plenty of respected writers have written Sherlock stories. I don't think people should be snooty about people loving a world and characters so much that they want to write their own stories with them.
comment in response to
post
Sure they are, they're stories written by people set in another author's universe and using their characters. Meets the definition of fanfic as far as I'm concerned.

By that logic, anyone going out in public is inviting critique of their clothing and general appearance, which is an argument that only an asshole would make.
I think it's also useful to consider that 'public' is relative. A story on a fanfic forum isn't intended for an audience beyond that forum.

I understand that Ovid's Metamorphoses are highly regarded retellings of earlier stories.
For more current examples, many of the Mythos works by authors other than Lovecraft are considered to be better than the original Lovecraft stories.

I for one am looking forward to the x-rated movie that sees Popeye and Bluto using Olive Oil rather than Olive Oyl.

I did read a book recently that I think is in the right region - Richard Kadrey's "The Grand Dark". Have you read it?

Hah, fair point. I think Miéville and Vandermeer are often described as 'the new weird' but I'm not sure that jibes as a term for the genre you're talking about. I hesitate to mention him, but some of Brandon Sanderson's novels are in the ballpark - "Yumi & The Painter" for instance.

I've been reading the "Stranger Times" books recently and they kind of sort of fit this - ubiquitous magic around that's just hidden from the normal folk, but it's everywhere if you know what you're looking for. Theyr'e also bloody funny. If you haven't read them already, I recommend them!

Agreed, having to have an opinion about everything is exhausting.

It's okay, you're allowed to call it a science fiction novel.

I'm glad you decided to stick around! And I would still feel that way even if all your series were finished already.

I think this might have been the best one yet, each book building on the others to make a highly satisfying story. You write hateful bureaucrats very well. Btw is it worth pointing out a name error I caught in the ARC? I appreciate likely to be fixed before publishing regardless.

I really enjoyed that film. So nice to enjoy a calm contemplative walk through the woods followed by some light yoga.

Weird how they spent most of the article dissing improvised play. Do they think all the dialogue in a game is scripted?

Not to take away from your experience, but I enjoyed it. I didn't have much of an attachment to the original movie so that may be a part of why our opinions are different. I did find it hard to watch the lecherous creep routine this time around, though, and would say it felt quite self indulgent.

I have some experience of writing for Fate (Horror Toolkit, The Secrets of Cats, Dresden Files Accelerated) and I'd be delighted to help with a Fate version if you need someone to bounce ideas off etc.

What system are you thinking of using for this? I feel like Fate Core would be an excellent fit!

They always feel like work to me. I enjoyed Grounded while I was doing story stuff, but quickly got bored when we were cutting down dandelions to make planks for our base; it just felt like being a digital lumberjack. No shade on people who enjoy, but it's not for me. I mostly play for a narrative.
