If this doesn’t count as ironic. Thinking about the construction of ethnoracial differences, and ideas that get built up about group identities and appearances.

The language in this MAHA Exec Order validates antivax, science contrarian, wellness industry, and conspiracy theory talking points we've seen for years. The phrasings may be subtle/debatable to some, but as subtle as a heart attack to anyone who has been following these subcultures for a while. 🛟🧪😷

One of these is very poorly timed.

A student at office hours just told me that "actually, this class [on quantitative research methods and analysis] is pretty interesting." Awww! #TakingWhatICan

Every so often I look at this 2018 screenshot and remember that everything can be commodified.

Nice to know some social media companies still care about discouraging hate speech. I mean, people in the US can’t help how they’ve been taught to spell English. vancouversun.com/news/cheeky-...

New: Meta has deleted trans and nonbinary Messenger themes, as well as the blog posts announcing them. Happens the same week that it has changed its rules to allow users to say LGBTQ+ people are "mentally ill" www.404media.co/meta-deletes...

"In 2023 Elsevier began using AI during production without informing the board, resulting in many style and formatting errors, as well as reversing versions of papers that had already been accepted and formatted by the editors." very innovative, very cool

I walked into a Southern Florida grocery store that says “the produce is so fresh it doesn’t even know it’s been picked,” and it turns out that no I won’t be coming back with my husband to check out the live shows at night. Wonder if he’d be welcome, anyway. At least I’m white.

Let's talk about the intellectual fetishizing of the Kalven Report (1967, U of Chicago). It's now celebrated--speciously--to support the idea that universities should not take public positions on social or political causes. First thing to remember: the Kalven Report WAS A POLITICAL STATEMENT. 1/7

The fortune in the fortune cookie I just cracked open was an ad for a real estate concern looking to buy houses, fuck it, this is what had finally radicalized me, let's burn it all to the fucking ground

Finally felt an earthquake from a 19th floor. It was 6.3, 200km away, and went surprisingly long. Kinda fun, except for a few seconds of big jolts in the middle. Good thing we’re in a city built for them. Right after, two friends here in Santiago texted to ask how we enjoyed the “mini earthquake.”

On reddit College Student 1 ChatGPT crashed oh no the only way I review is having it read out my notes Students 2-7 I know help! Students 8-14 Stop relying on an AI! There are more options! [other AI program] Students 21-22 LOL Read yourself. Students 23-25 THE MOBILE APP WORKS MY LIFE IS SAVED

We know students at elite universities are more likely have elite backgrounds. Can anyone recommend studies on how much of the elite university advantage is from going to the university, pre-existing privilege, or the combo? (FYI, the study below includes grad and undergrad students.) #sociology

It’s not just students. A professional adult, in his 40’s, recently tried to convince me that ChatGPT’s search bar is a great place to start when I have a question. “It’s like Wikipedia, but better.” Somehow. This even though he volunteered examples of responses (not answers!) that were wrong.

I am still deciding how I feel about accidentally having my phone’s browser close all other tabs. Five months ago, now?

First of two in a row that are just. too. real.

I am walking around town on the second day of Taylor Swift’s final three tour concerts, and I am seeing many locals in kinda-cold-Saturday-afternoon casual cozy wear, and many, many teenage and adult women in Outfits.

Correct. Truman tried to create a national healthcare system around the same time that European nations were making theirs. It was killed by Dixiecrats because it would have required integrated hospital facilities.

Did something new on the last day of quant research methods. I gave them data from a youth survey, said I wondered if team sports helps everyone's self-esteem, and had them explore for 45 min's then present two graphs. Woohoo! I saw thoughtful choices, good analyses, and greater awareness of skills.

For students, one of the Super Fun things about learning quantitative analysis is So Many Details. I wish I could have a penny jar for every time someone gets a detail wrong, and use it to buy It's-Not-Just-You pizza on the last day of class. Maybe I could do a virtual jar (and real pizza)...

Chris Rufo, architect of the conservative takeover at New College Florida, will present President-elect Trump with a plan to strip colleges of federal funding if they do not pull back campus diversity initiatives, the WSJ is reporting. www.wsj.com/us-news/educ...

I notice that the word “free” in “free marketplace of ideas” has now been dropped.

It is today that I found out about the Denver Selfie Museum. "The Denver Selfie Museum is an interactive photo studio with 25 different backgrounds for guests to take pictures of themselves in front of each background. We are an excellent activity to bring friends and family to..." That's all.

It’s picture 11 that really does it for me. Moves things from Huh Sure I’ll Call It Cute-Quirky to Wow I Didn’t Know They Could Seem So Menacing. I’d say it reminded me of 1984, except with the Matt Gaetz nomination and the House, plus New College as a governance model, it can’t really compete.

I have been concerned for years that states will block faculty from attending certain conferences or accepting some grants. It looks like that is now happening at North Texas. www.chronicle.com/article/a-te...

An informative piece on today’s Haka protest in the New Zealand parliament. It was after a voice vote, called for the ayes, and during the party vote that followed. The included video isn’t the best for seeing the haka. It is good for seeing the Speaker’s attitude during the vote as a whole.
