First lesson of US politics: "fuck you. I got mine."

To be clear, "collapse" is not a good scenario. There are no good scenarios right now. Even the most likely one which is "greviously wounded country continues to limp along for decades as more and more pieces of the machine of state fall off."

Krugman again on the money paulkrugman.substack.com/p/this-is-no... Like Krugman, I've never been a Newsom fan, but he's right, everyone who cares about democracy should be backing him now.

honestly one of the most encouraging recent developments is the naked opportunism of Governor Gavin Newsom, and I pray that there are copycats www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2...

Many are saying

It is extremely important to write about this totally insignificant and failing social media network.

the word "constitution" does not appear in this article nor does any indication that the Trump regime's actions might be illegal it does however note "White House officials maintain that the president is ... standing up for 'law and order' as Democrats go soft on violent agitators."

Like ultimately the GOP just doesn't care about other people and are ok with it if they suffer and die. They used to try to mask this with bullshit claims that the safety net actually harms poor people or that it would destroy the economy or whatever. Now they don't feel they have to anymore.

Holds up (and always will)

I keep hearing about this pro-family agenda on the right and I am not seeing it. There are certainly right wing wonks that support very specific policies (e.g. a child allowance but certainly not childcare or anything that could facilitate female employment) but they are not in the driver's seat.

For all the talk of populism, the GOP has not really shifted from its standard, "more money for us, fuck you" approach to policy making. Not really attempting to deliver anything to ordinary voters even as they torch state capacity and bumble into a recession.

This baby can fit so many more crises in it.

BREAKING via CBS News “US officials have been told Israel is ready to launch an operation into Iran. This is part of the reason the US advised some Americans to leave region. US anticipates Iran could retaliate on US sites in Iraq. Witkoff is still planning to meet with Iran” (No link yet)

Forgot his name. Gotta find that CNBC guy who spent the last few months on Bluesky telling us it is a workers party now and the reconciliation bill would push pro-family/pro-worker policies. I'd like to dedicate my publications this year to him specifically. www.firesidestacks.com/p/trump-acco...

The shopping cart test is actually a quite powerful predictor.

1 year later my daughter is much more knowledgeable about Stardew Valley than I am. Is already hoarding items for various bundles and giving me tips to maximize daily earnings.

It's firstly super bad to have DHS memes from basically-explicit White Nationalist accounts, but secondarily I don't know how anyone living in reality could think that *libs* are the ones don't obsess over stats. Data analysts are like D+90 and the Numbers Fuckstein coalition is all <30yr old libs

Congratulations Senator Cassidy! Every dead kid that results from this is 100% your responsibility

Our vaccine policy will now literally be determined by regular guests to the Joe Rogan podcast

Naming a Military Base after General Lee.

Will be posting a lot more about this more tomorrow, but for now, know that all the new tax cuts in OBBB exclude lower-income families. The typical family with kids needs $36k to get any benefit.

Our pundit class. Best in the world.

We can get those numbers down. We'll make GWB circa Fall 2008 look beloved in comparison.

Wow my former colleague @jacklandry.bsky.social at JFI went absolutely beast mode on the reconciliation bill, releasing 4 (!) separate microsimulation-backed reports on the bill's CTC and EITC provisions yesterday. Magisterial stuff. jainfamilyinstitute.org/series/child...
