It'll soon be time for me to get my next Covid vaccine - any particular one I should request at this point, or is it still 'any Covid vaccination will do fine'? I assume it's too soon for anything to specifically target the latest variant. Ta :)

Global average temperature is expected to rise to almost 2C above preindustrial in the next five years, according to the WMO, with falls in crop yields and more than a third of the world’s population being exposed to extreme heat. People, I'm sorry but we have to deal with this. Later is too late.

A common programmer beliefs is that our main way of programming — editing mixed imperative/functional languages in text files — is suboptimal, and we need to advance beyond this. The "improvements" include structural editing, visual languages, "dynabooks", etc. Some thoughts on this:

Every 10-20 years, a breakthrough technology promises non-developers to finally create software without needing to hire programmers. So far, every such technology resulted in the need for more devs… expert in this NEW technology (or knowing how to fix it up). Every. Time.

Really like @albertatech.bsky.social’s humor videos, but this latest serious one explaining what we *don’t* know about how LLMs at a tech level is a great example of what can help enable better AI criticism. (For example, LLMs are *not* “just better autocomplete”.) youtu.be/nMwiQE8Nsjc

@sperbsen.bsky.social you mention there is one book on how to build a combinator library - but you didn’t say which book?

Excellent thread. For my last book, 'The Magic of an Irish Rainforest', I visited pieces of this potentially exquisite habitat across the island of Ireland, and invariably saw the same thing: slow death by overgrazing + invasive plants. As I've seen with my own place, it's SO easy to reverse this.

Here, @westcountryvoices.bsky.social have compiled my thread on the utterly bonkers mismanagement of Dartmoor into an easy-to-read article: westcountryvoices.co.uk/prepare-your...
