What do we really mean by free speech? Social media bosses are suddenly all for it, but these vigorous defenders of free speech also often have a curiously narrow set of interests over which they wish to exercise it, by Farrah Jarral www.theguardian.com/world/2025/f... via @theguardian.com

Just to add context: the CDU, a pro-immigration conservative party pushing for more European independence from the U.S., won. The AfD, backed by Trump and Elon and aligned with Republican-style anti-immigration views, lost. I’m not sure why he’s celebrating, his side actually lost.

TARIFFS FACT CHECKING: "The gap between imports and exports left the U.S. with a $63-billion US trade deficit with Canada last year, down from just over $64 billion US in 2023. That's much less than Trump's purported $200 billion." - CBC News #tariffs #trump #factchecked 🇨🇦🤝🇺🇸

“Today, DEI has become the new N-word; the new rightwing abstraction deployed by Republicans to conceal their anti-Black racism.” My latest for the Guardian, in which I cite Lee Atwater, and bring lots of receipts. Sorry, but it has to be said:

From the Premier of Ontario.

Boycotting American products is the right idea, but many shared product lists are inaccurate. E.g. Heinz ketchup and Kraft products are made with Cdn ingredients/workers. Instead, check for labels like "Made in Canada," "Product of Canada," or Cdn commodity logos. Support Canadian workers!

Filming is underway for the new season of "The Handmaid's Tale" in Cambridge, Ont. This may be the fictional stuff of "Gilead" but it feels awfully close for comfort in our world today. 📷 Stacey Newman, Nikon D5

@washingtonpost: NTSB Board Member Todd Inman said it was too early in the investigation to determine whether human or mechanical error contributed to the collision on Wednesday night in Washington. “We will take the time that’s necessary,” he said. https://t.co/hDYfKfHiEF

Disinformation an 'existential threat' "The inquiry's report said while allegations of interference involving elected officials nabbed the most headlines and motivated debate in the [HOC] misinformation and disinformation 'pose an even greater threat to democracy.'" www.cbc.ca/news/politic...

In 2010, we visited and photographed Dachau—the first and longest-operating Nazi concentration camp. The atrocities committed are unspeakable. We should never forget. What human beings can and will do to one another is devastating. We must never, ever forget.

Paradox of Tolerance territory It’s hate speech, plain and simple Shut it the F down

No foreign power has ever posed as massive and immediate a threat to the United States as the current administration.

Publishing absolute propaganda from Ben Shapiro? Postmedia’s op-eds are becoming a sketchy YouTube channel

The thing to understand about Trump is like in his first term, he doesn’t want to govern. He doesn’t want to learn. He wants to campaign and look good. Republicans know this. So there are battles going on right now to take control of the actual process of governing.

Donald Trump's repeated threats to Canadian sovereignty are reminding us of how vulnerable we are -- and what we need to do to fix that. Could he accidentally end up making Canada great again? #cdnpoli www.nationalobserver.com/2025/01/24/o...

What does the dawn of Dark Age 2.0 look like...? Trump administration’s abrupt cancellation of scientific meetings prompts confusion, concern www.statnews.com/2025/01/22/t... "...will likely lead to interruptions in grant funding, which is bad for U.S. biomedical research."

New study shows radical-right populists are fueling a misinformation epidemic www.zmescience.com/science/news... Yep, #misinformation a political strategy. From study: "...we find that radical-right populism is the strongest determinant for the propensity to spread misinformation."

Listened to Corb speak on CBC's "What on Earth?" today... An excellent speaker, advocate and seems like an all-around good human being. Inspirational.

He was karate-chopping the neck of a transgender ghost. Calm down everyone.

This piece makes three wrong or misplaced arguments in support of a policy of inaction in the face of tariffs... www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/arti...

As a Canadian, 2 things are very clear today. 1. I’m VERY glad Canada & the United States are not the same country, and are in fact VERY different. 2. I will support the Political Party and potential Prime Minister in this year’s Canadian Federal Election that will best protect Canada from Trump.

Rep. Raskin is one of the people Biden pardoned before he left office. Raskin says it's strange to be pardoned for doing his job.

in my experience the genuine male feminists are just like, nice to women and treat them normally and don’t start podcasts or seek awards for it. performative behavior should always be a red flag.

I hate many of Doug Ford’s policies too especially on the environment and climate and have spent a lot of my time fighting them. However, I can still like his hat and I do admire him for standing up for our country in face of Trump. Some things are bigger than partisan politics. ❤️🇨🇦#TeamCanada

Of course -- OF COURSE -- the LA fires are related to climate change. We're not ready for what comes next -- which might include a financial crisis that starts in the insurance industry and housing market. www.nationalobserver.com/2025/01/17/o...

Air pollution has dropped significantly in #Paris in the last 15 years. Mayor @annehidalgo.bsky.social’s leadership has traded car space for green space, safe bike space, kid space.. and traded pollution for people. Good trade.

"It's not just that you're perpetrating a fraud" by spreading bogus images, expert Hany Farid says. The fakes also sow confusion about an ongoing catastrophe.

So true.👇 We can't let rage, lies, and fear win. Misinformation thrives on outrage, study psypost.org/misinformati... "...social media behavior is also driven by non-epistemic motivations, such as the desire to share information just because it aligns with your group’s beliefs."

future generations will remember this as a time of hat-based diplomacy
