Better lighting choices are more attractive, use less energy than other products, and help keep stars visible in our night skies. Check this out for more information: darksky.org/what-we-do/d...

The gutting of HHS and the CDC will literally and directly lead to the sickening and deaths of millions of Americans, and many more globally. Far more than that will suffer needlessly. This is horrific.

Today was a rare day with views of Sun. We got a nice look at the sunspot in active region 4048, reported to be growing and the source of M-class solar flares. More days of clouds and rain ahead but it was good to see that our local star is still shining! #sunspots #solarobserving #astronomy

Latest from our observatory maker: "The [shipping] broker advised me to wait until the 2nd of April USA time to see what extra paperwork there might be under Trump's tariffs." It appears to us that our tariff-loving President's "Liberation Day" will mean more money liberated from our bank account.

Welcome to British Summer Time. (aka Daylight Saving Time, in the USA)

The campaign has got some media coverage today, thanks to @ryanjfrench.bsky.social’s brilliant article www.space.com/space-explor...

29 March: New Moon at 10:59 UT (now). Start of lunation 1265. The next few days are a great time for evening stargazing. Download The Evening Sky Map (PDF) from skymaps.com/tesm/ and enjoy exploring the Universe using just your eyes, binoculars or a telescope! 🔭 #astronomy #stargazing

In case you missed it, my new book with @chroniclebooks.bsky.social came out this week!! I’m very pleased with it and I hope you will be too! A series of 40 essays walking you through the stars and what we’ve learned from their light! 🧪🔭 #booksky Bookshop: bookshop.org/p/books/fort...

Yesterday's Sun was worth a look! There's a nice scattering of sunspots to be seen with the northern hemisphere of Sun becoming more active now than the southern. There's speculation about another period of activity due to the shift. 1/2

Running on very little sleep this morning, we wanted to share our finished photo of the total lunar eclipse at maximum. The top of Moon's disk -- near the edge of Earth's deep shadow -- was much brighter than we expected and it was interesting to watch the light shift as the eclipse progressed.

Maximum eclipse achieved! I don’t think I’ll stay up much longer but it’s been grand seeing this total lunar eclipse through to its max! // #TotalLunarEclipse

Just a few more minutes til maximum eclipse!

As is often the case, the cameras are boosting color as well as brightness. To the unaided eye, lunar totality is dim and the color quite muted. Not the prettiest I’ve seen but very nice. And I like what the cameras are showing!

Totality has begun. On schedule, too!

The eclipse is progressing apace! And I’m even awake for it!!

Tonight’s eclipse details here: stellalunaobservatory.space/2025/03/13/a...

With clear skies forecast and a 41° low temperature, the weather is expected to be favorable, though timing brutal, for tonight's total lunar eclipse. wordpress.com/post/stellal... Image Credit: NASA Scientific Visualization Studio

Tim Berners-Lee proposed a hypertext system that would sit atop the internet #OTD in 1989, and now we all live in it. So happy 36th birthday to [sweeps arm in grand gesture to reveal this Hieronymus Bosch tableau of the damned] the world wide web. 🧪 Image: Tim Berners-Lee / CERN

Very crunchy and satisfying. Ceres is part of a complete and balanced breakfast!

The Vera C. Rubin Observatory, funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science, has achieved a major milestone with the installation of the LSST Camera on the telescope. This camera is somewhat larger than the one on my telescope.

Take a look — nearly straight up — tonight and you should see a little reddish “star” near the moon. It’s planet Mars. Both Moon and Mars are in the constellation Gemini tonight. You won’t have trouble spotting bright planet Jupiter west of Moon and Mars. It’s a beautiful night, enjoy!

There is no astronomical reason for daylight saving time but there are good arguments against it. We hope to see a day when we revert to standard time year 'round. In the mean time, remember to set your clocks *ahead* one hour tonight and read Mark Boslough's excellent thread ⬇️

There are reports The White House is considering a 50% cut to NASA’s science programs, and 25% of its overall budget, which would be catastrophic for both current and planned missions. But, there is still time for the administration to reconsider. Read our full statement ⬇️

Taking our Sun shot today during a break in the clouds at midday, we enjoyed a temperature of 52°F, powder-blue skies, brisk winds. Seeing was surprisingly good. #sunspots #sun #solarobserving #solarimaging #astronomy #spaceweather

A break in the clouds, temperature at 56°F, moderate winds, and very good seeing for today's Sun shot. #sunspots #sun #solarobserving #solarimaging #astronomy #spaceweather

Someone on Reddit described the mood in the USA as “imagine you’ve been diagnosed with cancer, and half your family is cheering for the cancer” and that feels about right

Taking advantage of a rare, clear morning, our Sun was seen in a deep blue sky, between passing areas of cloud. Nice 36°F temperature, light winds, and excellent seeing. #sunspots #sun #solarobserving #solarimaging #astronomy #spaceweather

Visited the Grande Lunette at Paris Observatory during our JWST meeting today - this 1891 refractor is apparently 3rd (or 4th) largest in the world after Yerkes and Lick. The telescope made the first observations of Uranus' retrograde spin (1902) and disproved the idea of Martian canals (1909). 🔭

Oh, how I’d love to be able to get that job!

We now have enough Starlink reentries to use the Kaplan-Meier survival analysis estimator to determine the median Starlink operational lifetime: 5.3 years. This mixes together V1 and V2M Starlinks.

Want to wake up every morning and have this as your view? Well, now's your chance! Best* telescope in the world! 📡🔭 * according to me, and many others, and you know it is, so let's not argue about this, kthxbai (pic by me)
