I feel like him and other like him conflate being broke with having no responsibilities, because the closest they ever came to being broke was being a kid living at home and having their parents dealing with everything. It would blow their mind to find out broke people also have responsibilities.

If the kind of dead was like it wouldn't switch on at all, I would suspect the power supply. They will often have overvoltage protection that will blow and not be able to switch back on till it's sat for a while. So might be on its way out.
