Anyone have a Wall Street report or economic research paper they can pass along saying “Tarriffs to accelerate growth, reduce inflation and boost employment?” …I didn’t think so.

DOGE is emerging as the most inefficient, inaccurate govt operation If DOGE were a real DOGE, DOGE would shut this DOGE down www.nytimes.com/2025/03/02/u...

This is outrageous and will kill people. All need to speak out against this insanity.

I knew I’d seen the scene before that played out in the White House today between the president and Zelensky. youtu.be/8vwsu4-jFBw?...

From AEI: “Despite Trump’s aggressive resort to tariffs, our trade deficit will widen under his watch as it did in his first term. It will do so because tariffs are being accompanied by a far-reaching program of tax cuts that will increase the budget deficit and…reduce our country’s savings level”

Presidential economic adviser Kevin Hasset said on cnbc today “Doge is identifying cuts that we really ought to cut….they (congress) appropriate money and then we spend it on really silly things… I don’t think fighting polio, malaria and hiv is silly. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/27/h...

Trump’s tariffs announcement today wiped 500 points off the Dow. S&P is down 2.4% since the inauguration. Now up a more pedestrian 3% since the election.

How the Trump and DOGE terminations — perhaps the biggest job cuts in history — may affect the economy www.cnbc.com/2025/02/23/h... This dwarfs anything we've ever seen on layoffs from one economic actor. 300,000 cuts where IBM's 1993 cuts of 60,000 are the largest ever in the private sector.

A little frightening that the WSJ editorial page, which supported Trump for president, is asking this: “The question that occurs after his Friday evening purge of Pentagon leaders is whether he wants personal loyalty or honest military counsel.”

Was this the Canada/Mexico Tariff Incident, Fiasco, Debacle, Dry-run or Scare? Guess the upside is all the spreadsheets are now programmed for repricing the world if it happens again.

There will be those who say tariff threats were the only way to get Canada and Mexico to commit more to help secure the US border. And there will be those who say that’s what effective government is supposed to do but without freaking out world markets, businesses and people for four days.

One of the great sales jobs of all time was Wall Street supporters of President Trump explaining away the tariff threat as just a negotiation tactic. Maybe they believed it. But Trump has made clear: This has nothing to do with negotiations, fentanyl or immigration. He means to put tariffs on …

Wow. Phil Gramm and Larry Summers join together in WSJ op-ed opposing tariffs and eviscerating the admin’s arguments. www.wsj.com/opinion/a-le...

Kudos to @eamonjavers.bsky.social. Well done.

Less than 24 hours after the crash, Pres Trump blames DEI for the deaths.

Some strong words from LaGarde about a bitcoin reserve “I think there is a view around the table… that reserves have to be liquid, that reserves have to be secure, that they have to be safe, that they should not be plagued by the suspicion of money laundering or other criminal activities…”

I have to think tariffs on our 3 biggest trading partners are a hard stop for fed rate cuts for now. Plenty of good theories why their impact could be absorbed by exporters, importers or exchange rates. But w/ jobs healthy and inflation above target, fed will exercise its option to wait and see.

Some questions not asked today of the fed chair. Mr Chair, what fed district would Greenland be in ? Mr Chair, are you considering the president’s buyout offer ?

I’m no labor expert, but my read of the letter is that this is not a buyout. Not sure what to call it, but doesn’t have classic elements of a buyout where you get paid and don’t work, either up front or over time. Also, not clear prez has the right to spend money on such a program.

Of course, if everyone takes the buyout or is fired, no one will be there to review the sequestered spending or even make payments if the pause is lifted.

Cnbc Fed Survey: Trump policies likely good for growth bad for inflation. www.cnbc.com/2025/01/28/w...

I’ve been reading some of the Econ literature about deregulation and whether there is an established connection between deregulation and disinflation. As you might expect, it’s complicated, depending a lot on what’s being deregulated and how much there was to begin with

Maybe before we throw out DEI we might try and understand whether it played a role in the black-white unemployment rate gap dropping to an historic low of around 2.4%. It’s been there for most of the past year and has been low during most of the Biden presidency….

It’s remarkable to me how disasters in Democratic states and cities are all the result of liberal policies but acts of God where the GOP is in control. Also didn’t know the depth of expertise about wildfires and brush clearing among Republicans. Who knew?

Very sad about the passing of Art Cashin. He was a mentor and friend to all of us at CNBC. He will be missed and his wisdom will not easily, if ever, be replaced. Art Cashin, New York Stock Exchange fixture for decades, dies at age 83 www.cnbc.com/2024/12/02/a...

Wall Street is so busy downplaying tariffs (“the market has absorbed it…it wasn’t so bad last time… it’s only a threat”) that few have considered the general absurdity of it. 25% tariffs on Mexico to deal with immigration and drugs will create more Mexican unemployed, which will worsen both problems
