A very nice review of our history of Concordia. reviewcanada.ca/magazine/202...

A very special moment in Paris with our DePOT artists in residence Rémy Chhem and Paul Tom. I've known Remy and Paul for almost two decades, since the onset of the Montreal Life Stories project. It was great to have them as part of DePOT this year.

Great media coverage of our project's visit to the former steel-making town of Longwy, which is essentially France's Youngstown Ohio - a site of working-class resistance and eventual defeat. www.republicain-lorrain.fr/culture-lois...

Loved that our #DePOT2025 conference opened at the headquarters of France's CGT union federation with a panel of trade unionists reflecting on the ongoing struggle against deindustrialization. Huge thanks to Xavier Vigna for making it possible!

And the inevitable 'class of' 2025 group photo of our Deindustrialization Summer Institute in Longwy - with the fallen blast furnace (at the end of the golfing driving range) behind us.

Every DePOT summer institute for emerging scholars is unique. This year, our 4th, it was in deindustrialized Longwy - yes, that's a fallen blast furnace at the end of a golf course driving range - and Nancy in France. Huge thanks to the organizing committee and hosts!

I signed onto this letter.

One country in this conflict has illegal nuclear weapons… and it’s not Iran. One has attacked five other countries in the last year… also not Iran. And lest we forget, one is actively committing genocide… still not Iran.

In our Open Letter to @MarkJCarney @AnitaAnandMP, 412 legal, human rights, diplomatic, international affairs, social justice, civil society, faith & labour leaders & experts make it clear: Canada must act to end genocide in #Gaza. 🧵1/10

So impressed by the @oralhistoryie.bsky.social . Definitely one of the best oral history conferences I've been to!

My slides were a train wreck, but very much enjoying my time with the Irish Oral History Network! All kinds of great papers - including a whole session on oral history and linguistics!

Word is that Canada will enter a deal that gives the US first dibs on all rare minerals (which are integral to arms-making) in exchange for tariff relief. Hard to reconcile with political sovereignty and becoming less, not even more, dependent on the US. www.economist.com/the-americas...

A new blogpost on how to use line and graphic drawing in ethnography and more broadly in social research 👉🏽 alexandrinavanke.com/2025/06/11/s... #ethnography #drawing #sociology #anthropology #geography #creativemethods #research

Here is the cover for our forthcoming U of Toronto Press volume, produced by the Industrial Closure working-group of @deindustrialpol.bsky.social . The cover is based on the visual art of Francesca Marconi from Italy. Eleven cross-border chapters, all multi-authored. @deindustrialpol.bsky.social

Google and Meta search both report that Cape Breton Island has its own time zone 12 minutes ahead of mainland Nova Scotia time because they are both drawing that information from a Beaverton article I wrote in 2024

I signed onto this strong open letter demanding that Canada act on the destruction of Gaza. The recognition of an independent Palestine is long overdue. www.alexneve.ca/blog/prime-m...

Nice to see the cover and advance reviews of Indranil Chakraborty and my new edited volume now online. It is a great line-up. Deindustrialization and Economic Restructuring in Post-Reform India will be out in October! www.routledge.com/Deindustrial...

Huge thanks to Concordia University for recognizing my op-ed writing with the Opinion Leader of the Year Award (2025). About 10 years ago now, I decided to regularly translate my research into newspaper op-eds. It is a challenge I still enjoy 70+ op-eds later. www.concordia.ca/news/media-r...

Hot off the press! Ariane Mak @arianemak.bsky.social présente son ouvrage *En guerre et en grève. Enquêtes dans les cités minières britanniques (1939-1945)*, paru chez @editions.ehess.fr editions.ehess.fr/fr/ouvrages/...

Excited to see my book inside the @mcgillqueensup.bsky.social Spring / Summer 2025 catalogue!

We decided to go the non-traditional route and have a "conversational" book launch! If you're in Fredericton on June 16th join us at the public library to hear us discuss "Debt, Destruction, and Development" from a political science and historical perspective. All are welcome!!

The news is never neutral. Contrasting headlines tell us a lot. Today's Globe ran with the headline "Russia’s modern-day gulags for Ukrainian children" but consistently softens Israel's "incursion in" (destruction of) Gaza. Thank goodness for Arwa Mahdawi. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Agreed. That said, I can't help thinking that there is no equivalent historical advisory body for the federal government in Canada (except for the national archives) where the Canadian Historical Association nominates someone.

Very much looking forward to the upcoming Oral History Network Ireland conference!

Dans @lemonde.fr ce matin, je montre comment la gestion des toxiques au travail et dans l’environnement fait l’objet d’une négligence partagée érigée en règle de conduite, trop souvent impunie ! @afvs.bsky.social @chs-umr8058.bsky.social @annesouyris.bsky.social www.lemonde.fr/idees/articl...

Once again Arwa Mahdawi speaks truth to power. The political repression underway on campuses across North America is unprecedented at least in my lifetime - producing real fear as the reprisals are all too real. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

As the father of a severely disabled daughter who requires round the clock care, I felt physically sick after I listened to this Montreal radio segment a couple days ago. Nothing less than cold calculated murder for convenience sake. We are in dark, dark times. www.lapresse.ca/arts/2025-05...

The closure of factories, steelworks and mines has pivotally shaped how we imagine national economies. I wrote on Deindustrialization and Nationhood for the new bumper Routledge International Handbook of Deindustrialization Studies. Get it for your library if you're interested!

Quite the failure in process when nearly half the caucus (of 7) is alienated enough to formally protest the selection of an interim leader. www.theglobeandmail.com/politics/art...

If a uni withholds a degree from someone who has met all the requirements for that degree bc they delivered a speech that reflects that student’s ideas and political commitments, then the uni is admitting that degrees are awarded for obedience, not intellectual achievement. Which, hey, may be true.

Le prochain congrès du programme @deindustrialpol.bsky.social(Deindustrialization and the Politics of our Time) se déroule cette année à Paris, du 19 au 21 juin avec pour thème : « Désindustrialisation, nation et immigration : quelles réponses politiques ? »

Today's deindustrialization studies round-table was truly inspiring - such great research! A recording will be uploaded onto the DePOT project's Youtube channel in the coming weeks. www.youtube.com/channel/UCOd...

Working the conjuncture! @adamtooze.bsky.social brings me back to the classrooms, supervisor meetings and bars of my PhD with this discussion of conjuctural analysis using @jamiepeck.bsky.social 's work. Could hear Jamie's voice in my head while reading this. adamtooze.substack.com/p/chartbook-...

Our big deindustrialization conference is coming up in Paris next month - here is the programme: deindustrialization.org/depot2025con...

Carney's decision to name a Minister of AI and not of Labour says it all. No just transitions on the horizon as we enter yet another period of massive restructuring.
