Some members of the audience berated Jun Li, a Hong Konger, for condemning Israeli apartheid at the Berlinale by howling at him "Is China a democracy?" Do they imagine he thinks China is a democracy? Always loved this enigmatic interaction in GMK. Is Yuri appearing in the sub her father's unconscious hallucination, or - in keeping with the film's supernatural themes - are the unconscious Tachibanas communing in the spirit realm... or is this Yuri the last manifestation of the Guardian Monsters?

I first saw GMK over 20 years ago and it still surprises me. Yuri films a bogus news story as her colleague throws a stone into water to fake a monster appearance. Later, she reports to the entire nation on two very real monsters... and a stone falls into the Port of Yokohama, reviving one of them.
