That’d be a Bond film I might actually enjoy

Severance prompted my 21 year old son and I to stream the Ben Stiller Show. Tom Cruise: Dress Casual had him rolling.

I ran a demo of dangerous boomer toys at SecretCon 2024 in Minneapolis. Fortunately the Thingmaker was operated outdoors.

Learned to skate and play hockey as an adult but never really accepted fighting being part of the game. The Tkachuks’ unprovoked fighting seems so typically American. Made it hard to cheer for Team USA.

Had the World Book Encyclopedia and Childcraft set. Both were published in 1968 and were green and white. Whenever there wasn’t anything good on TV or otherwise just bored, I’d grab one off the shelf and read whatever looked interesting.

Hmmm. Thinking back to that era (or earlier), if I was to go back to watch anything it would either be Hill St Blues or Homicide: Life on the Street. I was never really into cop shows, but from what I remember those two had great acting, writing, and compelling stories.

Oh yeah! Read the plot summary and list of cast members on Wikipedia and it almost tempted me to slog through season 2. Duchovny!? Wow!

And Walter Olkewicz was the cable guy. Just looking for future Seinfeld cast members kept me watching.

As much as I tried I probably just can’t isolate the standards of the past decade or so (Breaking Bad, et al) to fully appreciate it for what it was. And binge watching definitely dilutes its impact.

Tried to put myself in a 1990’s frame of mind so I could appreciate its novelty. But even back then I think much of the acting and plot would seem like soap opera dreck to me. Made it to a few season 2 episodes and found none of the characters sympathetic and many just irritating. So bailed.

Never saw an episode so binge watched season 1 last week (mainly because Kyle MacLachlan was hilarious on Portlandia). Fun seeing actors I never expected like Warren Frost and Grace Zabriskie. I really, really wanted to like it as I loved Blue Velvet. Ooof.

The cost is actually a bargain considering what one gets in return in my opinion. So I was scolding myself for being a such miserly boob.

Had a day to myself in Lisbon and was wandering around that neighborhood. When I came upon the castle's entrance, my terminal cheapskatery nearly caused me to balk at the €15.00 entrance fee. Glad I pried open the wallet and went inside. A truly magnificent place.

Yup. Maybe not middle school level though. Was disappointed to learn much of the autobiographical accounts conflict with reality.

No desire to do the "cancel service, get a discount" dance with a phone rep? At least having Warner as an option gives your bluff credibility.

I remember being almost giddy going to a regimental classified briefing when I was a lieutenant. In line with other butter bars trying to act nonchalant. Ugh! So boring! From then on they took attendance to make sure enough people showed.

Admittedly, more frequent descaling could have prevented having to muck about the insides to get at a clog. This definitely put stress on a plastic fitting that later leaked.

We've loved our five year old Breville to near death. But thanks to YouTube and forums, fixing the innards and valves is do-able (the repeated heating and cooling can wreak havoc on the plastic fittings).

Visited Lisbon in 2022 and loved it. Expressed to various locals how it seemed like a great place to relocate to. More than a few politely expressed I'd be part of the growing problem of escalating housing costs due to expats from wealthier countries. Tempered my excitement about the prospect.

This reminded me of when I assumed I had a lifetime subscription on a used receiver cuz service lasted several years without even registering it. Not sure this is the case, but heard Sirius periodically sends cancel signals to unregistered devices. Mine must have been off during all those events.

When I could finally treat myself to a Swiss watch, I bought a stainless IWC Portugieser. I liked its simplicity and sapphire-glass back to view the movement. Wore it all the time and happy that at least it's crystal remains unscratched.

When I was a teen, I wanted a Rolex GMT after seeing them advertised in magazines. Having no concept of Swiss watches, I was shocked when I finally learned the price. I bought a similar looking Citizen but never used the bezel.

I was stationed at 29 Palms, California (mostly hated it) but when I was out in the middle of nowhere, the vastness of the desert and the distant mountains was almost overwhelming. Really hard to describe to anyone who hasn't experienced it.

How long would this take to complete if you dedicated a few hours a day (or however long you’d work on it without any other projects)?

I'll bet there is a German word that aptly defines this phenomenon (as opposed to "jumping the shark" or enshitification) of a TV series, band, start up company, etc. that has a period of energy and inspiration and then devolves to just going through the motions.

Ozarks. Loved it. But then it seemed to become formulaic and less compelling. So I bailed.

Oh yeah. My son and I streamed this a few months ago after I recalled watching a season or two years ago on DVD. We loved it but once they went on the run, we started getting pissed at the stupid story lines and cheapness of the production. So we bailed.

It was a way of combining a dreary commute and staying in shape. It took a toll though. I was almost worthless as a dad that night and the next day if it was a weekday ride. By the spring it was just drudgery and I rarely biked in winter again because I hated going that far in darkness.

I bought a used Cannondale touring bike specifically for commuting in Chicago because I had to carry a suit in a pannier/garment bag. One winter I did the 20 mile ride each way (only a couple times a week) and I felt like Shackleton each time I arrived at my destination.

Seagrams, Schweppes, and Canada Dry taste like they are made from a powder compared to Vernors. But it is my favorite drink and I'm not even from Detroit. Decades ago found it at the neighborhood Kwik Stops in San Diego and I was in heaven.

Damn! This brought back a crappy memory from HS when a tech drawing teacher bamboozled my classmates and I into buying the set of five or ten. Like what do a bunch of 16 year olds need these for?! Could never figure out how to keep them clean.

Some Army officers stuffed the jukebox at the Guantanamo Bay O-club to play Baby Got Back dozens of times. They were asked to leave as well. Thank you Sir, may I have another.
