Oh ... And the teachers. TBH most pupils will pick / like / engage with the subject where they can relate to the teacher

Which is why using things like "Science Capital" is so important to getting the teaching right....
Science is so much more exciting than being able to list a set of equations.

How did we get such a disjoint. They love big documentries and the like. Kids are fascinated by space and 'wow' experiments
But by the time they grow up, it seems to be OK to think science is a nice 'optional' thing.

Not just go 'recruitment trawling' for numbers and neglect both the space for good academics to flourish and for UG to learn how to learn.

What would be great though would be some means to coach academics on how to sell to the skills market.
My experience was that my dept colleagues were still talking to tutor groups as if it was still the 1990s.
It is a new set of rules now -- need to learn how to play the game

I used to know someone who 'headhunted' academics for posts outside that sphere.
They gave up about 8 years ago as the demand from industry dried up.
Shame as there will be a potentially huge tallent pool emerging.
For now, it is mostly personal networks i think.
