While I did 100% age of calamity and had a fine time (framerate notwithstanding), hw1 is absolutely a lightning in the bottle game

That is extremely fair, and I fully agree!
I just often see people trying to "just focus on the tech" and actively disregarding the circumstances it exists in; which I think is irresponsible; hence my caution. I'm not worried based on the responses I got here, though.

I very deliberately avoid slogans and Big Politics Words when e.g. talking to coworkers. It does wonders, though finding ways to precisely express things without falling back on just naming them is a bit more work.

I hope I'm not sounding too abrasive, but:
Why would somebody have to *use* it to have an opinion on it? I guess if we're exclusively talking about the efficacy or w/e, but genuinely, hating it without having used it sounds like a sane & reasonable take given the state of the AI industry.

I recently read some old C code and it made me realize why linked lists are so deeply embedded in discourse.
The simplest way to have a dynamically-sized collection in C is to simply put `structname *next;` into a struct. A linked list fused into the struct itself.
Saw it in some MUD server code.

I originally fell in love with map/filter/fold because "wow I can write such cool oneliners with this!!!", but stayed with them for *this* reason
they have more structure than a loop. I can't do certain things with them and that makes me more confident in the long run.

That is genuinely the opposite of true. "security through obscurity" is openly derided, being a bit different won't protect you.
Having more attackers actually makes software safer over time, thus the reliance on standardized (open source) security components.

I reckon a big part is that it was very much intentionally Marketed:tm: in a way that let laypeople infer that it was smartly answering questions in a way that it isn't (without explicitly lying about it), a lotta slightly more savvy people I know are fed up with it based on those grounds

I'd make an exception for things that have a pretty natural name. I wouldn't call my `config` more than once, but having it be a separate thing still makes sense. A

Damn, I knew I was vaguely scared of the concept beyond compiling for unknown linux sometimes; but I had no idea just how deep it goes.
(also there's a broken markdown link to Darwin like two thirds in)

The middle ground i settled on is "system level achievements (like steam or gamerscore or w/e) are evil but games having integrated achievements on their own can rule"

Yeah in my experience if authoring docs isn't done in exactly the same spot/environment as dev, it's simply not going to happen
Genuinely the closest to functioning I've seen something be is "markdown files wherever, scraped together into a wiki in ci/cd", and it also sucked

I'm a doomer about Final Fantasy x Cool Thing because of how bad the FF monster hunter (Explorers) was
but a *good* FF warriors might actually dethrone HW:DE as the Best One

I usually look up blog posts/articles bashing languages I use every few months, and it's remarkable how often defenses of C/C++ boil down to "I don't know what memory safety is and also something something DEI"

usually I get annoyed by "(beloved thing) is actually not that good" backlash but fr, "The Nemesis System" takes up so much rhetorical space for a thing that's, like, fine
