There's actually an extremely large scholarly literature about this. With some regularity, dictators order their troops to shoot protestors, the troops are like "wtf no," and then the dictator falls. I'll dig ho and dump some cites below in a second

i sincerely think a lot of you believe that the people who join the service are robotic psychopaths who will mindlessly listen to whoever is in charge, and there is nothing i can say to disabuse you of that frankly delusional belief

4½ months in and they’re already at “After protests over our masked agents shoving people into vans and militarized raids at Home Depots, courthouses, restaurants, and middle schools, we’re putting troops in the streets over the objections of cops and the Governor”. Not much room left to escalate.

We hear about how pro-immigrant side is extreme. There is literally nothing more extreme than this statement. Being willing to sacrifice the country’s foundations for an evil goal

its really obvious he never wanted the job of being president as much as just the title of president

Just to recap, Trump has taken the extraordinary step of federalizing 2000 member of the California National Guard — over the objections of the state’s governor — in response to a protest that currently involves A FEW DOZEN PEOPLE AT A HOME DEPOT

The federal government is so irretrievably fascist under this shitbird administration that the El Ay Fucking Pee Dee is comparatively reasonable and fair.

it appears to be official that for the first time in decades the president has federalized national guard troops and is sending them in to Los Angeles this evening. This is the statement from the White House It’s about to get very, very scary now. Be safe y’all. Fight for one another.

Shoutout to the one guy at the LA protests blasting Rage Against the Machine while draped in an American flag. You a real one.

The metaphor police are working too hard

The most striking thing about the LA protests is how many people just dropped everything to show up and yell at federal agents. There are people in suits, and carrying dogs, and wearing flip flops or bike helmets. These are not people who planned to do this today. But there they are.

Pete Hesgeth — who wants to rename the Navy ship that honors Medgar Evers, a WWII veteran who landed on Omaha Beach — is using that same beach for a photo op in which he promises we will “never forget” the veterans there. What an unbelievable asshole.

This seems like a great day to remind Bluesky that Stephen Miller lived four doors down from me freshman year And our student council person asked him (and everyone) to sign a birthday card for our dorm’s janitor And he threw a tantrum and wrote an op-ed about not socializing with “the help.”

"It's really hard to fathom that the guy making my pizza for 25 years is a gangster and a terrorist, and the person who shows up in an unmarked car wearing a mask and body armor comes to take him away is somehow the good guy” www.wnep.com/article/news...

abolish ICE and lock these agents in a dungeon.

If Harry Reid had ever been capable of rolling over, he’d be doing so in his grave. This nepobaby failson trying profit off his dead boss’s legacy without actually embodying any of that legacy is embarassing af

My latest Substack take: how Democrats can use podcasts like the Joe Rogan Experience to break through the right wing media ecosphere, and why the Harris campaign sucked. open.substack.com/pub/manonthe...

that’s right

This is one of the world’s largest and most sophisticated physics experiments, it’s won the noble prize, and it literally does not work without both sites. Like it can’t function.

I dunno, growth on this platform continues apace because I am now finally seeing normies that talk about sports and movies and TV—people who live lives that don’t center around politics

I think it’s worth starting the conversation about the “male problem” in the Democratic Party that every single person involved in said convo is a member of an educated elite and not directly plugged into those spaces and doesn’t really have a better idea about how to reach them than anyone else

As a Washingtonian the Capital Jewish Museum shooting really does hit different. I happen to know the chairman of their board (I work in the museum field). He’s an incredibly nice man, and I can’t imagine how he’s feeling right now.

multiple horrific crimes can happen at once. why is this so hard for people to grasp.

We are really speedrunning to the next Great American Depression

Reason: we need to write an article on Mike Lee’s insane proposed bill on obscenity. We need a quote from someone at FIRE FIRE: how about @aricohn.com? Reason: Will Ari give us a quote that doesn’t refer to Lee as mucus-brained fart nozzle? [internal discussion] FIRE: We can’t commit to that, no

I'll just take this moment to point out that the US Institute of Peace, just a few weeks ago, contained one of the finest concentrations of US expertise on India and Pakistan, and crisis management in South Asia.

LA will never get real public transit but badly needs it

JPMORGAN: The UK deal “grabbed headlines today but looks limited in scope .. “.. still leaves the UK worse off compared to the trading relationship prior to Liberation Day. “We are less enthused by the recent ‘deals’ than the markets and still see a material trade war shock as our baseline.”

This is the journalism the people need

Broke: the Catholic Church is going to schism because Francis and his followers are too liberal for ideological conservatives in the Church. Woke: The Catholic Church is going to schism because the new pope is going to say deep dish is real pizza and the Italians just can’t stand for that

The present is the stupidest time in history relative to how much knowledge the average person could conceivably have

You do have to look at this as a form of collective mass hysteria across the Western World. People have radicalized themselves into wanting a society with a level of hermetic seal that has simply never been possible--or desirable--to achieve.

the most important difference is something i highlighted here: adamelkus.com/posts/ratcr Its the difference between someone for whom fantasy is play (Pritzker) and someone who has no conception of a separation between fantasy and reality (Trump)

I don't agree with that. Politics is not a clean business. It never has been. People may not like to think of it, but it's true.

Germans have zero moderation when it comes to humor: they are either the funniest, most humorous people you will ever meet or they act like the very concept of a joke is an affront to their dignity. There is no in between

IN A CHAPTER TITLED W H A T ????????

To say legacy media is not built for this moment is a gross understatement. The people destroying this country are being treated with respect.

wow. we’re seeing these galaxies as they looked when the universe was only 6.5 billion years old, which is a little less than HALF its current age.

The argument I always have with takes like this is that I’m a cancer survivor. Without modern chemotherapy I would have been dead by age 24. I dislike on principle the argument that the past was somehow “better” than our current lives. God knows modern society has its problems, but I like breathing

A LOT of people do not want to hear it but in the United States at least, food has never been safer to eat, not to mention tastier
