Love the energy of this blackout, and if more of us can learn to live without Amazon that's super cool. But getting Amazon to change it's behavior is a lost cause. We need the right regulatory guardrails in place so they can't get away with the shit they've pulled. www.cnn.com/2025/03/07/b...

Democracy dies in decorum.

Ahem ... Is this on? Yesterday our crew at @TPM launched our annual March membership drive. If you're not a member, I hope you'll consider joining. The link is right here. I wanted to take a moment to give you what I hope are good reasons to join. talkingpointsmemo.com/memberships?...

Is today's news tempting you to cancel your Washington Post subscription? I fear an exodus of liberal readers will only hasten its shift rightward. May I suggest the better move is to break up with Amazon? We have a guide for you:

Great 15 minutes on why the decline of small business is a a big problem and how the revival of a key antitrust law could make all the difference. Full conversation here: youtu.be/pi2vnhD0ZCU?...

GREAT PIECE! The Intellectual Dishonesty of Jason Furman prospect.org/economy/2025...

Sick day for me today gang, but read this great piece from Bob Kuttner responding to Jason Furman's hatchet job on Bidenomics: prospect.org/economy/2025...

1/ Dear everyone who just went grocery shopping and saw this, There’s a person in government who could flick his pen and investigate what the hell is going on with eggs. No, not your congressman. His name is Andrew Ferguson. He’s the new head of the @FTC. Has he done that? No

Must read by @nhegde.bsky.social. "Democrats need to make a decision. They can either continue their decades-long accommodation of billionaires and corporate interests or embrace a genuine populist agenda that directly challenges concentrated economic power." democracyjournal.org/arguments/an...

#ElonInTheOval should be trending.

I'm eager to read this.

This energy.

In a sentence never before uttered by humans, I am delighted to share that an alligator stole my conservation instructor’s hat by jauntily walking into the water while wearing it 🐊

This is happening all over the country.

Thinking about historical parallels. People talk about coups and autogolpes, the fascist seizure of power in the 1930s, and there are resemblances. But there are other models we could think about.

People are getting up off the mat.

Worthwhile read. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/02/o...

On Lina Khan's last day at the FTC, the thing I'm most grateful for is that she threw open the doors of this agency to people—through Open Commission Meetings where anyone could speak, inviting public comments & traveling to ranches, drugstores, town halls & more. Hats off.

If you are interested: I answered a lot of basic questions about tariffs -- what they are, how they work, and are they likely to happen, err, tomorrow -- in this interview with my local NPR affiliate! thepublicsradio.org/economy/if-t...

“The notion of being a nation of small businesses and farmers and people who control their own destiny when it comes to the economy is very much aligned with the idea that we’re a country where we control our own political destiny.”

"eliminating civil rights reforms" is much better phrasing than "removing DEI" "DEI" was hijacked from academia and half-assed corporate inclusivity efforts to frame civil rights reforms as elitist and wasteful. adopting their framing and rhetoric helps pretend bigotry is efficient.

“But of course that’s part of the point of all the boasting and big talk. Don’t fall for it. Don’t be cowed. Don’t be demoralized. Trump and Trumpism aren’t as strong as they look. In fact, it could well be all downhill from noon today for Trump and Trumpism.” @billkristolbulwark.bsky.social

1. Big news! The FTC took action today to end Walmart’s stranglehold on the grocery market. The agency filed suit against Pepsi for giving illegal and unfair price advantages to Walmart while charging competing grocery retailers higher prices.

This is a big deal, especially for independent grocers. Let's make this "the end of the age of Walmart."

1. This is a beautiful piece about the local grocers that have opened in struggling food-desert communities — only to find that they must pay suppliers much higher prices than the big boxes, making it difficult to stay open. The solution is simple: resume enforcing the Robinson-Patman Act.

Please read & share widely, this debate has some real 🌶️, as well as plenty of Karl Polanyi

1. Hello. States are on the front lines in the fight against corporate power. State leadership in antitrust has been crucial - and continues to be so. Next week, @ilsr.bsky.social and @stateinnovation.bsky.social are hosting a discussion on how states can carry the antimonopoly movement forward.

For decades, big retailers have been allowed to dominate simply by virtue of their size & leverage over suppliers. The FTC's revival of the Robinson-Patman Act stands to change that, with huge upsides for local economies & consumers, @ronmknox.bsky.social writes. And it's got support on the new FTC.

Amazon's warehouses are abusive and dangerous, the Senate HELP Committee report makes that clear. But don't forget: Amazon insulates its warehouses from competition by strongarming sellers on its monopoly platform into using its logistics business. A statement from me/ILSR: ilsr.org/articles/ron...

A reminder that mergers are often just a tactic to bump stock price to make shareholders happy, without doing any real investing and innovating. Kroger's merger with Albertson got shut down, but that's ok, there's always stock buybacks!

Yes, the FTC’s price discrimination suit against Southern Glazer’s is about liquor store competition. But it’s also about grocery prices. It’s about what stores can exist in your neighborhood. It’s about fairness as our economic guiding light, instead of bigness. www.ftc.gov/news-events/...

The FTC’s decision in the 1980s to abandon the Robinson-Patman Act was one of the most consequential policy decisions of the last 50 years. It decimated rural and urban communities. Here's our statement on the FTC's important move today to revive enforcement of the law: ilsr.org/articles/sta...

The FTC has successfully blocked the Kroger/Albertsons mega-merger - a deal that would have meant higher prices for shoppers and even more dominance in the retail food industry. It's a massive win, one that could trigger deconcentration in the industry. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...
