“uncharted territory”

None of this has anything to do with effectiveness, or “lethality,” or promoting “warfighters," or any other buzzwords. It is praetorianism, plain and simple, and it is an assault on our military and our democracy. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

There’s something happening in this country.

So they removed the black chairman of the Joint Chiefs in the middle of his 4-year tour, without cause, and they're seeking to replace him with a white **retired** Air Force three-star general who lacks the requisite experience as a service chief or combatant commander? Huh, how about that

Palestinian Life Expectancy in Gaza cut from 75.5 to 40.6 Years by Israeli Total War: The Lancet

gravedigger of american democracy. a more malign influence than john c calhoun.

I have long believed that not enough has been written about how GOP members have felt physically intimidated by Trump supporters. It doesn’t excuse their cowardice, but it still deserves more attention.

Interesting read - 'Conspiracists are about to get a dose of reality' www.thetimes.com/article/b3bb...

This is fucking incredible.

- Why did you provoke and attack those two burglars?

Los Angeles peeps—spread the word about ICE. We won’t know for sure until it happens, but better safe than sorry. Be prepared.

Not at all the point but this mess represents the tediousness of the Persian Gulf/Arabian Gulf “debate” coming to American shores

It’s tough to compete with this stuff

I don’t see the consolation in the notion that this will end badly for Trump/Musk/Maga and their collaborators. It will be vastly worse for everyone else. Sure, criminal regimes ultimately fall - but not without enduring gains for them and unrecoverable losses for those they destroy.

I'd like to see more writing on how the Musk/Trump junta feels like a frontal attack on the entire concept of virtue, in even the most traditional senses. They are actively demonizing and punishing everyone who doesn't worship Mammon.

Fascinating profile of a park ranger in San Francisco who works with unhoused residents and has adopted the novel tactic of treating them like human beings, building relationships, and helping them access resources on their own timeline.

I know Stathis. He was a colleague of mine at the University of Chicago. He is a pretty buttoned-down scholar. For him to tweet this out is… something.

have parents who denied their children life-saving vaccinations then watched them die ever been brought up on murder charges, and if not why not and when will they be?

A point to consider.

This is fascism.

I’m having great difficulty right now seeing how our political system doesn’t devolve into violence.

What these nihilistic vandals are doing to dismantle science & medicine—generations of expertise & public service & life improving benefits—is cultural revolution level national self harm. No foreign foe could inflict such brutal damage & senseless suffering on US so fast & effectively & unresisted.

The Anti-Politics Machine, which I read in a political anthro class as an undergraduate, blew my mind, and taught me more than any comparative politics class. RIP.

The entire penultimate paragraph is great!

An amazing resignation letter to Bove from an AUSA who worked on the Adams case. Money quote: “I expect you will eventually find someone who is enough of a fool, or enough of a coward, to file your motion. But it was never going to be me.”

every day I think about the comms strategy of the korean opposition party in the wake of the coup and I get so burningly resentful that other countries have legislators who are awake

i am going to put a finer point on this: executive orders are not laws. and they certainly are not royal decrees. they are interpretations of existing law for the purposes of enforcement. the fact that so many people are treating them as laws is actually driving me a bit insane.

You have questions. Mostly of the "What Can I Do to Resist This Coup?" variety. Choose Democracy has answers. Here's a really handy guide to the how/what/why of organizing... Share widely. Link here: choosedemocracy.us/what-can-i-do/

underrated reason to be angry: the people making us uncomfortable right now are extremely comfortable by comparison

“Today, DEI has become the new N-word; the new rightwing abstraction deployed by Republicans to conceal their anti-Black racism.” My latest for the Guardian, in which I cite Lee Atwater, and bring lots of receipts. Sorry, but it has to be said:

MAJOR BREAKING: Pope Francis has written a letter to US Bishops saying he’s following “major crisis” of “mass deportations;” takes on Vance saying “The true ordo amoris that must be promoted is that which we discover by meditating constantly on the parable of the “Good Samaritan”

There is no text that cannot be manipulated and selectively ignored by the dishonest and evil, as reflected in, for instance (1) the Trump administration’s approach to birthright citizenship, and (2) increasingly, mainstream American evangelicals approach to almost everything.

Snickering aside, this is actually an excellent example of how symbolic politics works: choosing a unifying, hegemonic, ambiguous symbol draws people in, and pushes them to think about its contemporary political relevance - while also allowing plausibly deniable subversion.

For the record, my favorite palace

This is America, 2025 In one weekend (!!), one New York Times photographer, Doug Mills, travels from Gitmo to the Super Bowl to take two unforgettable images of where we're at as a nation

Trying to think of the last protest movement in the US that legitimately ended up being a net negative for the people that organized it, whether i agreed with them or did not. Fringe issues became less fringe and mainstream issues became more popular.
