Shooting memorial cancelled because of a shooting is so very American.

These kinds of guys are panicking like crazy because they're losing the argument and with it their paychecks.

I think what’s most striking about the last few months is how rarely anyone in the GOP applies this simple test. A lot of checks and balances rely on this kind of worrying about precedent but it’s now totally absent, as if they don’t think they’ll ever be out of power again.

I am for every day all of us turning our first focus on fascism (or, if you prefer, authoritarianism) itself. They are attacking and gaining ground on countless fronts. Time spent arguing with those with whom one could be in coalition is time fascism uses to seize more territory.

Hi All, just sent out this free piece. Trump is actively working with Putin to see Ukrainian civilians killed, some now and more in the future. He is depriving Ukraine of vital anti air defense, which the Ukrainians are willing to buy (helping the US economy) open.substack.com/pub/phillips...

Late last year, @Harpers sent me to the West Bank to report on the state of the nonviolent resistance movement. Nothing I had seen over more than a decade of reporting there prepared me for the levels of fear and devastation I encountered. harpers.org/archive/2025...

We've reached the point where Republicans are flying to El Salvador to visit one of the most vicious prisons in the world to have photo ops so they can prove their loyalty to the President of the United States.

Thread!

It’s been 37 days since Ukraine agreed to Trump’s ceasefire proposal after the U.S. suspended intel sharing. Russia has still not agreed and continues to wage war without any additional U.S. penalties or sanctions. www.cnn.com/2025/03/11/w...

Ah. The old “potential terrorist” argument for locking people up in a concentration camp for life. How many pardoned seditionists were “terror watchlist people”?

The exact research MAHA should be supporting if they actually cared about health.

Beyond the sheer stupidity of this, taxpayers own this technology! What a waste.

In my experience: Scientists don’t make sweeping generalizations about an entire profession.

“[W]e’re also seeing…the favoring not of Christians per se, but of a CERTAiN KIND of Christianity. Trump & his people are aiming not to just work w/ the movement, but to shape the movement itself, to make it more faux-populist, demagogic & frankly authoritarian.” - @katherinestewart.bsky.social 1/

Welcome to the resistance, *checks notes minimum three times* Wall Street Journal Editorial Board? www.wsj.com/opinion/dona...

It’s $150,000 but what’s money anyway?

There is no negotiating with fascists. Every benefit they offer is a lie. Everything they threaten you with they intended to do to you regardless. Everything you let them do to others they will eventually do to you. Against fascists there’s only uncompromising defiance and opposition.

Yep. An example is how many nice parents are excited that the department of education is gutting agency because the support services for their kids at the local school are subpar. The diagnosis of the problem is warped by privilege of working government.

She TIED for 5th place, Marisa. They made her SHARE the aluminum (?) medal with a trans swimmer! The glory of a SOLO fifth place finish was stolen from her. It's the greatest injustice of all time and don't you dare suggest she's a pathetic bigot for making it her entire personality.

I worked in a prison just across the Ohio River from West Virginia & can tell you exactly why WV has reduced its recidivism rate so much (and, thus, its overall crime rate which is among the ten lowest in the country): unlike most red states, they've funded & bolstered their prison college program

Water is being used as a weapon of war. In early March, Israel cut off the electricity supply to Gaza’s main operational desalination plant. “Gaza is a killing field, and civilians are in an endless death loop,” UN secretary general, António Guterres. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Steve Kerr: "I believe in academic freedom. I think it's crucial for all of our institutions to be able to handle their own business the way they want to. And they should not be shaken down and told what to teach, what to say, by our government. That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard."

This country is becoming unrecognizable. What we’re seeing is state-funded fear. We’ve warned people: keep filming, go live on social media so these moments are documented and shared. This wasn’t a case involving masked ICE agents—but that’s happening too.

Next level abuser talk. “It’s your fault you didn’t stop me!”

“…members of the DOGE team asked that their activities not be logged on the system and then appeared to try to cover their tracks behind them, turning off monitoring tools and manually deleting records of their access…” What kind of shady s**t is going on here?? www.npr.org/2025/04/15/n...

“Our task is to build a wide and deep movement, as spiritual as it is political, strong enough to stop these unhinged traitors. A movement rooted in a steadfast commitment to one another, across our many differences and divides, and to this miraculous, singular planet.”

What the headline should really should say is “In effort to seek revenge against his opponents” because that’s literally what he is doing

This may be the greatest ever chart in the history of public opinion studies.

The student paper at the college at which I teach reports a "tsunami of takedown requests" from international students terrified of being targeted for innocuous, legitimate op-eds & opinions.. Many ask in person--leave no trace in writing. Reminds me of my father's account of studying in the USSR.

The only way the vice president is correct is if the Constitution only gave citizens the right to due process (he should read it again— it applies to people, not citizens) or if you don’t think about non-citizens as people at all. That’s the ugly reality of his view here.

The DC attorney nominee has appeared dozens of times on Russian state media www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/202...

Stephen Miller lied about Abrego Garcia’s case-claiming SCOTUS said “no district court can compel the president to exercise his..foreign powers” Rubio says he can deport ANY alien, even for “EXPECTED beliefs” Trump said “the home growns are next” STAND UP DON’T LET TRUMP TAKE OUR DEMOCRACY AWAY

Authoritarianism

I gotta say, “women are going to space” sounds a lot nicer than “the ultra rich are taking hyper-polluting joyrides to space while the planet descends into climate chaos”

🧵DISMANTLING DEMOCRACY I've been keeping track of Trump actions - now up to 192. Here, I dig into 69 actions specifically targeted at undermining democracy, rule of law & suppressing dissent. It's been 12 weeks of assaults on democracy. based on christinapagel.substack.com/p/a-republic... 1/18

MAJORITY of Americans now disapprove of Trump on deportations by 53% to 42%

There's always been reason to believe DOGE was hacking govt systems. Now a whistleblower has substantiated it at NLRB, precisely the kind of data compromise labor unions worried about when they sued re DOL.

As the government flings itself apart, we will keep coming back to the grim reality. Trump can’t be restrained, or reasoned with, or babysat for the next four years. The only way to bring power back under the rule of law is to remove a lawless man from power. www.msnbc.com/opinion/msnb...

This. Write your name in the history books on the right side of the ledger.

If the U.S. government is going to take the position that, once removed from the United States, folks can’t be brought back, then it sure seems to me that federal courts should be reflexively and categorically barring *all* removals until they’re 100 percent certain that the removals are lawful.

So classified that Noem posed in the freaking prison with the prisoners behind her…

Trump’s tariffs are hitting farmers hard — in ways you might not expect. This honey farmer voted for Trump 3X — now costs are through the roof, hiring’s frozen, and he’s lost $150K in government contracts. Asked if he regrets his 2024 vote? “Perhaps I should’ve considered other options.” NO SHIT!

"We are living through a revolutionary change, a broad shift away from the transparency and accountability mandated by most modern democracies, and toward the opaque habits and corrupt practices of the autocratic world" www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

Trading tariffs in exchange for personal gain? Is there anything illegal anymore when it comes to trump?

"They understand enough about the moral consequences surrounding their actions to know they don’t want decent citizens to know who they are. I want to know who they are." Amen.

Calm down, folks, it was just an attempted assassination of a Jewish Democratic governor and his family on the first night of Passover, it’s not like somebody spray painted a dick on a Cybertruck.
