To mark my 1,000th post on BlueSky (🤔) here’s a piece I wrote on the changing, more dangerous nature of the Chinese cyber threat, the most significant change to the cyber threat landscape for ages It’s published today, with my thanks, by the think thank @rusi.bsky.social rusi.org/explore-our-...

“We can’t run any form of complex military operation without them, or sustain even simple tasks.” www.ft.com/content/beb3...

I’m on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme (c1hr18:30) talking about @joemenn.bsky.social’s scoop that 🇬🇧 gov’t has apparently ordered Apple to unlock encrypted cloud services I try to explain why, as well as provoking a needless 🇺🇸backlash, it probably can’t even work 1/4 www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/...

Exclusive: Security officials in the United Kingdom have demanded that Apple create a back door allowing them to retrieve all the content any Apple user worldwide has uploaded to the cloud.

Jeremy Hunt - “never heard of due diligence for a public sector deal before”…… explains a lot about public sector deals. www.ft.com/content/ffa4...

NEW: Blackmailing scammers are creating fake "news" videos impersonating CNN to pressure victims into paying them. The videos often include a scam victim's name, photo (sometimes explicit), and their location. Full story here: www.wired.com/story/scamme...

“The cost of a ransomware attack against lab services provider Synnovis last year… [cost] more than seven times the company’s most recently disclosed annual profit.” #cybersecurity www.ft.com/content/d2be...

“Tugendhat, a good man, but also proof of how far a pukka accent and background can take an empty vessel on the inert sea of British public life” www.ft.com/content/8178...

“Amazon needs Broccoli to furnish them with ideas for a new Bond movie, but Broccoli doesn’t want to make a new Bond movie with Amazon. “

NEW: WIRED obtains docs showing DHS privately warned police in August that US cities are woefully underprepared for hostile drones, expressing doubt in US tracking capabilities. Cops were encouraged to conduct exercises to test their response.

“….government review of the construction workforce in 2016, says migrants are “doing the legwork UK workers don’t want to do” www.ft.com/content/ca44...

The journalistic imperative to tell the truth doesn't magically go away because someone died

What I like about it is the inherent argument that British business leaders are so inept that they've all let their businesses be captured by woke insurgents and only just noticed. That wouldn't be a great endorsement of capitalism.

“we believe the severity of the risk facing the UK is being widely underestimated” #cybersecurity www.thetimes.com/uk/technolog...

“But one definition of a bubble is a good idea that has gone too far. Awe of “American exceptionalism” in markets has now gone too far.” www.ft.com/content/49cc...

Huge win from @franzanth.bsky.social creating a Content Scraper Blocklist: bsky.app/profile/cont... It's a blocklist for the kinds of engagement bait accounts that repost stolen content, often with misleading captions.

POV: The real enemy of democracy is not misinformation or disinformation, it’s the type of education that doesn’t provide people with the necessary tools to critically approach information offered to them. The core fight is not against ignorance of current facts, it’s against poor education systems.

Really, really great thread that highlights some of the telltale signs of scam operations on social media that most users don't know about. Read it to help educate and protect yourself.
