Word of the Day is ‘ingordigiousness’ (18th century): extreme greed at the expense of principles.

What's the brutal persecution and subjugation of women and girls when there's a cricket tournament to think about, eh?! England should boycott this game.

This is so tragic and important in equal measure: the anti-US reflex is throwing some people into the arms of the extreme right. But just because the US helped install Pinochet doesn't exonerate Assad. There *is* a principled position based on inter alia human rights, not left-right tribalism.

This is utterly disgusting to create your own journal, set of rules that self-select authors & have ‘peer review’ that CANNOT reject papers. How will your average joe blogs know the difference but guess what - RFK et al have a journal of “peer reviewed articles’ to cite to support their decisions

If you think slowing or stopping #climate change is too expensive, you have it backwards. Failing to slow or stop #climatechange is what's expensive. www.bbc.com/news/article...

🔴NEW🔴 I did a deep dive into Musk's disinformation campaign about grooming gangs for @opendemocracy.net www.opendemocracy.net/en/far-right... Please read it, I have had to look at a LOT of far right content so make it worth it 🤪

What will the future of the warming stripes be? 2024 could be the start of a stabilisation of global temperatures, or it might appear to be a cool year. Which one of these stories becomes reality depends on our choices today, and every day until then. We are likely to regret not acting sooner.

The most important point here -- and it is made in the article -- is that the changes are asymmetrically favouring the extreme right. So it's not "policy" or "free speech", but carrying water for fascists. Somewhat annoyingly, I had only one Facebook account that I could delete.

I am a climate scientist and this is correct ⬇️

These are the key facts everyone needs to know about climate change, according to @yaleclimatecomm.bsky.social. I shared this post across 7 different social media platforms, including FB, LI, Mastodon, Threads, X and Twitter both pre-and post-Musk. Here's how their engagement stacked up. 🧵

So, you may ask, why do I get so angry about the new liberal spin on RFK Jr, as in, "he gets some things right, so let's collaborate on those" or "we have to work with him because he has a huge following we need to reach"? Because I've seen this movie before. 1/

As women are banned from all sports, sports stadiums, employment & walking without a male chaperone, the only way you will see a woman in an Afghan sports stadium is if she is being flogged, stoned or hanged #ItsJustNotCricket #BoycottTheICC Actions ⬇️ brightonsisters.wordpress.com/action-four-...

How extreme was the weather this year? Is a question we, @wwattribution.bsky.social , get asked every year. Looking back at the events we studied in detail & some new stats, we try to give an answer www.worldweatherattribution.org/when-risks-b... - in short: it was pretty bad, but things can change!

Latest from #AGU24: That reduced cloud cover that contributed to 2023 and 2024's record temps? It could be part of a worrying long-term trend of cloud loss, now spotted in observations over the past two decades. *If* this is a feedback to global warming, it is stronger than anticipated. A big if!

The psychological challenge of climate change - our brains are hard-wired to respond to immediate threats, not a slow-motion disaster happening at a global scale (and that's not even considering the tsunami of misinformation hitting us every day).

I'm thrilled, relieved, and a bit anxious, to announce the publishing of my book. It examines how journalists reported on unemployed cotton workers, who gathered in their thousands in Stevenson Square Manchester, to protest their poverty. link.springer.com/book/10.1007...

9 days to Christmas in my mini advent calendar and today’s shot is from Flash, the highest village in England. This remains one of my favourites because it's so very English; the snow falling softly over the churchyard and covering the wonky postbox on a stick beside the old stone wall.

I wish Autumn never had to end. Not just for the colours, but also that calmness and stillness, the quiet that hangs in the air like a physical presence. But every falling leaf is like a little tick from a clock, time passing in orange swirls and flutters.

Summer UK temperatures have warmed faster than global average temperature. But the very hottest days have warmed 4x faster than the global average, especially in south-east England. Global warming is not "just" 1°C or 2°C. The effects of climate change are non-linear, especially for extremes.
