I got a cheapo USB HDMI capture card (like, ~$15 cheapo) so I could play Switch on my laptop screen and it just worked plug n play out the box with the Linux version of OBS, no issues whatsoever. High on this victory, I'm now going to try ordering a cheapo projector, wish me luck 🀞

Since Sunday I've been taking a glycine right before I go to bed and it's crazy how much easier it's been to get up in the morning. It's like opposite benadryl re: how it affects my sleep quality

Very sus how often I see AI/LLM evangelists promoting it as a learning tool (the thing it's absolutely shit at) rather than a time saver to streamline the creation of certain kinds of output that the user is already capable of/knowledgable about (the thing it's actually quite good at)

Yooo my tutor is in Thailand! I mentioned to her last year that Chinese people have visa free entry now and she mentioned a few times thinking about visiting and her husband saying no because of a recent high-profile murder, but this morning she tuned into our lesson from a hotel near the airport

The measles outbreak in Texas is reminding me of the public letter Roald Dahl wrote about losing his daughter to measles in 1962, just before the vaccine was publicly available.

WHERE CAN I BUY THIS

Almost forgot to mention that while discussing Valentines candy today I found out Chinese uses the exact same word for both marshmallow and cotton candy. Like if someone offers you ζ£‰θŠ±η³– you just have to be chill with either possibility

Today's tutoring lesson made me realize how many ridiculously specific words we have for interior design features in English, e.g. Chinese doesn't see the point in having different words for barn doors, pocket doors, or sliding glass doors (those are all just push-pull doors, duh)

...so this is how I find out the Bibbi Babka song has been to the tune of a piece called Limbo Rock this whole time youtu.be/aB9DC9orYaM?...

I mostly try to avoid trauma dumping about current U.S. politics news during my tutoring sessions but towards the end today we got talking about media spin and I mentioned the theatrical military plane deportations and she was like,"oh, because using direct government planes is cheaper, right?" 😬

The pollution here hasn't been great since the beginning of the year, and the past week has been especially bad, but this is wild: www.nationthailand.com/news/general...

Gianmarco is so real for this youtube.com/shorts/ZAewS...

KK Slider real

Talked in circles with my tutor this AM because I was talking about cults but cults are mostly legal per the U.S. constitution and she was CERTAIN that the word for cult should only apply to illegal institutions and I must mean something else if it was legal/thriving like scientology. IF ONLY HON

It turns out 2025 is the year when my last shred of tolerance for grandpa-ass "the internet isn't real πŸ€ͺ" takes disappears

Currently debating whether or not the fashion energy I want to bring into this year is goth Mr. Peanut πŸ€”

For months now I keep thinking about Ralph Bakshi's Wizards and debating a rewatch because I'm afraid the antagonist using literal Nazi propaganda as inspiration/weapon is going to come across WAY less goofy and heavy-handed now than it did when I was 16

Jornal Nacional showing the truth.

I've talked with my tutor before about the total lack of history instruction in her public schooling and how she only learned about e.g. WWII on her own as an adult, but today I brought up yesterday's little nazi salute stunt and she'd /never seen the nazi salute before/ and I'm still reeling

Extremely bored of grown ass adults using unflattering photos of legitimately terrible people like the ultimate gotcha. To paraphrase David Mitchell (re: Ann Widdecombe, I think?), in defense of Curtis Yarvin, the thing that's bad about him is all of his horrible views, not the fact that he's ugly

Still completely surreal to me that Google chose to light its search engine on fire

The shrine to David Lynch at Bob's Big Boy is really something...

Decided to bust out the chamoy challenge kit I got for Christmas for dessert. Is the challenge how bad the fruit roll up sticks to your teeth? Or washing the unholy food coloring off your hands afterward? Tasty though (with thanks to @mytonkspup.bsky.social )

Gradually getting the hang of this pin curl brush out thing btw, slightly dampened and repinned in big sections last night, then this was this morning's quick and dirty pre-lesson styling

In today's lesson I learned that phreaking in Chinese is just "phone hack". Was v relieved my tutor is my age and I could just be like "you know how pay phones used to make a particular sound when you put coins in?" and she was just like "yeah of course" instead of looking at me like I had two heads

It's that special time of year when people living in Asia open their food delivery apps, see a new icon photo on the sponsored McDonald's listing, and peruse the New Year's promo menu while softly whispering "what the fuck"

My tutor was trying to french braid one side of her growing out short hair at the beginning of today's lesson and I got to share with her one of my favorite hairstyling adages,"the back of my head is none of my business" (and she confirmed ζˆ‘ι ηš„εΎŒι’δΈεΉΉζˆ‘ηš„δΊ‹ is a close enough approximation)

How it started/how it's going vintage hair edition

Very anxiously anticipating the first GDQ finale in a long time to actually feature streamers/a game format I regularly watch for fun (Super Metroid map rando) πŸ™Œ

I'm not here to victim-blame, but if I were a boss with multiple attack options and whose only weakness was explosions, I simply would not hurl bombs in an attempt to blow up Mario

An article about early hominid genetics: "...human chromosome 2..." My brain:

First day of trying a set meal delivery service, honestly hella excited that the first thing I see in my breakfast box is a pile of whole grains πŸ₯²

I've always asked google dumb questions to amuse myself but now that their AI actually tries to answer and I'm forced to realize a lot of people instantly take it as authoritiative it's a lot less fun :/

Most fun part of today's lesson was accidentally blowing my tutor's mind by mentioning that most of the U.S.'s "New π‘₯" states/cities are named after towns in Europe. Came up because she had deduced cajun food must be sweet because the "Orleans" chicken wings they serve in China have a sweet glaze

Actually remembered to snap these special gacha machines at the Seoul Incheon Baskin Robbins this time

Alright, this again, see you in Seoul!

This is already the best thing ever.
