ATTENTION The Washington Post is collecting data about funding issues. Please consider contributing. thewashingtonpost.formstack.com/forms/scient...

Important less talked about narrative here: NIH intramural program and clinical trials and patient care also taking a huge hit - NIH has always treated rare genetic diseases and cases that can’t be treated elsewhere and conducted trials. Now all are frozen & patients are suffering. 😭💔

Despite court order, NIH grants remain frozen. Newly awarded grants, grants with fundable scores, & funds for a new budget cycle of a current project are all *FROZEN*🥶 and not being released. US research is being choked to death & is on life support right now www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

"Every criticism, no matter how valid, will be used by the Administration to service these goals. It will not be used to shift money from what we individually think is a waste towards what we like. It will be used to just cut." #SciSky #BioSky #NIH

Called my reps! Did you?

UPDATE: The NSF graduate fellows' (GRFP) email address ([email protected]) just said that: "Award announcements are still scheduled for the spring although a specific date has yet to be disclosed." But still makes me wary that NSF's main FAQ didn't say that directly...

The Ecology and Evolution of Infectious Diseases NSF program has been archived. Huge loss. Does anyone know if the current proposals in the queue for funding will not be reviewed or are panels still happening?

Even as they push back against Trump, US universities must step in and protect early career researchers! Postdocs and PhD students hit hard by Trump’s crackdown on science www.nature.com/articles/d41...

What the shit "For FY26 we are told about plans to reduce the NSF budget by 50%-75% - such reduction will mean no new awards for at least a year, elimination of divisions, merging of programs." nanoscale.blogspot.com/2025/02/the-...

Nice to see how this project developed through the years & published in @currentbiology.bsky.social by Saheli Saha et al from @iamsamayp.bsky.social group 👏 Mass lysis of predatory bacteria drives the enrichment of antibiotic resistance in soil microbial communities www.cell.com/current-biol...

I had two grant proposals up for review in the NIH Bacterial Virulence (BV) study section. It was canceled without notice this morning. Without those grants, my lab must close within a year. And so the purge of scientific research in the US continues 🤬 #MicroSky 🦠🧫🧪🧬🔬

Please stop saying it saved money until you understand the value of what was cut. They are downsizing, and if the stuff getting cut had real value, its not a saving.

Grief. There’s no better word for what I’m feeling now. Grief. Knowing that my life’s work is seen as frivolous and unimportant. A line in a ledger to be crossed out, by a 19-year-old kid named BigBalls.

Another completely private philanthropic organization kneels in fealty to the regime.

Another consequence from Trump's attack on science : Vanderbilt has temporarily paused graduate student admissions. Current graduate students and faculty raised alarm about research funding, doctoral stipends, visas and career opportunities vanderbilthustler.com/2025/02/15/g...

I escaped poverty because I am a scientist. And I am a scientist because of the National Science Foundation. A 🧵:

"This feels like the early days of the pandemic, except there's less I can do about it", a colleague told me yesterday. Yep. One thing you *can* do is outreach. My sense is that the majority of the country doesn't yet understand the scale or the stakes of what is happening. We have to tell them:

The head of the food division at the US Food and Drug Administration has quit in protest over sweeping staff cuts that he warns will hamper the agency’s ability to protect public health. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

The Democrats on the House Science Committee have set up a website to collect stories from fired federal employees, anonymously if desired democrats-science.house.gov/sciencefirings

A teacher emailed me & said "My scientist didn't reply to me. My scientists ALWAYS reply to me! What the heck!". I was like "Well. Science is kinda crumbling. Friends/colleagues are losing their jobs or at least funding, & some are being told to cease all outside communications". She hadn't heard.

A large portion of grants awarded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health cannot be funded for the foreseeable future because of an indefinite hold on submissions to the Federal Register, according to an email reviewed by The Transmitter. By @avaskham.bsky.social bit.ly/3X8ngz8

Professors please pull up a chair. I’ve been talking to my classes about what has been going on. I explained indirect costs to them. I talked to them about what a probationary employee is in the government. At the end of class they asked if we could talk about it more. (1/)

This is a good summary of some of the horrific "staff reductions" that have gone on across CDC and NIH. 1/3

ACTION THIS WEDNESDAY: Researchers from New York universities are holding a rally to protest the funding cuts at Washington Square Park at 4 pm. This will be part of a national day of action, with rallies at HHS in DC and all around the country. RSVP HERE: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...

One of the many, many “pauses” and cancellations devastating our next generation of researchers. “The NIH Intramural Program has paused the recruitment of IRTAs, CRTAs, and Visiting Fellows in all training programs pending guidance from Health and Human Services. Check back daily for updates.”

A quick summary from the end of another long day... Some, but not all, tenure track investigators within their first 2 years did receive termination emails. I have not yet been able to determine why some did and not others. Even with one branch, there was variability. 1/n

Attending #BPS2025? Want to know more about tangible steps you can take to challenge the attacks on science in the U.S.? Please attend an Emergency Town Hall Meeting on Tuesday at 1:30! @biophysicalsoc.bsky.social @blackinbiophys.bsky.social Please spread the word!

On January 6th, 1995, my (now ex) wife and I boarded a flight from Heathrow to JFK on a one way ticket. We had two suitcases and about $900 in cash - this was everything we owned and we were moving to the US. We thought it was maybe for 2-3 years. I had visited the US once, for a conference, and

“I’ve never seen anything like this in my 55 years,” says Beth Pratt, a regional executive director for the National Wildlife Federation, who lives near Yosemite and is working on a book called “Yosemite Wildlife.” “Just to want to gut the Park Service? I don’t understand it.”

Welcome to the Bluesky account for Stand Up for Science 2025! Keep an eye on this space for updates, event information, and ways to get involved. We can't wait to see everyone #standupforscience2025 on March 7th, both in DC and locations nationwide! #scienceforall #sciencenotsilence

BREAKING On Monday, Popular Information broke the news that the NIH had frozen virtually all grant funding in violation of 2 federal court orders On Wednesday, NIH leadership distributed a memo, acknowledging that its funding freeze was illegal and directing staff to resume issuing grants.

I see the same thing for the IMSD, MARC, G-RISE and Bridges to Doctorate programs, but unfortunately the link to NIH's interest in diversity is still inactive (see ex grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...) 🧪

🧪Surprise, I'm back with another #breakingnews request. If you work in biomedical research (infectious disease, chronic disease, food safety, drug safety, vaccines, etc.), I'd love to hear (very soon) about how you think your field will fare under RFK's leadership of HHS. Please share widely!

Relieved that the MOSAIC K99/R00 grants.gov page is no longer expired (updated today), and it sounds like people are able to submit apps again 🧪

Make sure you, your trainees, and anyone else who might listen to you understands what "indirects" actually are, how they are established, and what Universities contribute. H/T @rodallab.bsky.social Please share widely! www.youtube.com/watch?v=yxTD...

If you read one thing about the current chaos happening in US science and “indirect congrats” this one is really good and well- explained. Things are dire 👇

Many people, including academics, don't understand what F&A is for. Please share to help. 1) Translate to "overhead" in common business accounting: 60% IDC => 60/160 = 37.5% overhead (low!) 2) Infographic explaining what it's for, linked here: www.cogr.edu/sites/defaul...

Again if you are at an institution that relies on NIH funding, in a state that either is or isn’t on this lawsuit, I’d love to hear how the next few days shake out. Signal is davelevitan.26, can remain anonymous.

And now back to our regularly scheduled $hitshow The dismantling of NIH programs to increase diversity in the biomedical workforce and the abhorrent treatment of talented young scientists
