The DOGE firings have nothing to do with “efficiency” or “cutting waste.” They’re a direct push to weaken federal agencies perceived as liberal. This was evident from the start, and now the data confirms it: targeted agencies overwhelmingly those seen as more left-leaning. 🧵⬇️

‼️The US-based @ipcc.bsky.social technical support unit (TSU) for Working Group 3 Co-Chairs has been terminated, and the US won’t be attending next week’s IPCC meeting where the AR7 chapter outlines will be approved. More by @afreedma.bsky.social here:

Celebrating small wins: publication of a new paper out of our group, led by Meghan Zulian. This work was partially supported by federal funds (NOAA) along with other sources. (1/n) journals.plos.org/plosone/arti...

In the midst of all of this (hands waving frantically) chaos, not sure we are talking enough about this. CA is set to slash their state funding of UCs and CSUs by 8-10%. Impacts will be huge, and widely felt, for students, staff, and faculty. calmatters.org/education/hi...

this practice - sucking CO2 out of the air and squirting it into old oil fields to push up more oil - is only profitable for oil companies because of tax credits in Biden's signature climate law, the Inflation Reduction Act. stuff like this is where "all of the above" energy policy leads

A very good week to follow and learn from early career scientists, I think!! 👇🏼

Join us! Science Homecoming helps scientists reconnect with communities by writing about the importance of science funding in their hometown newspapers. We’ve mapped every small newspaper in the U.S. and provide resources to get you started. Help science get back home 🧪🔬🧬 🏠 sciencehomecoming.com

Sonoma County residents: Join me for a town hall this Friday, February 21st at 6:30 pm at Redwood Credit Union Headquarters. RSVP at the link below, or watch live on my Facebook page.

Although NOAA's page on atmospheric CO2 levels has vanished, you can still get this vital information from Ralph Keeling's team at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego keelingcurve.ucsd.edu Please follow bsky.app/profile/keel... for updates and share Don't let science be hidden

I’ve spent the last 8 years working on a book about forever chemicals, or #PFAS, and the chemical industry’s decades-long campaign to cover up their dangers. What I discovered along the way is deeply disturbing, and yet the journey has left me hopeful. www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/554198...

Upon learning that yesterday would be my last day as a program officer at the National Science Foundation, I shared this parting message with my colleagues. The next few months will be frenetic and stressful for them. Here are some things that you can do to help them with the mission ahead. (1)

Please share: The Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, Democratic Staff, is surveying the impact of the Trump Admin’s mass firings of federal employees from science agencies. If you were terminated since 20 Jan 2025 please fill out this survey: democrats-science.house.gov/sciencefirings

Well, this took off! Lots of replies focus on whether the jobs report will be honestly reported. A mini-thread on that. 1/

Some folks have asked, given recent news, “how do I show my friends/family the impact of NSF?” We have some easy Fact Sheets for you! Here’s a brief thread about this website: new.nsf.gov/about/fact-s... which hosts a ton of useful one-pagers.

I think we really need to repeat, and keep top of mind - The federal employee firings are NOT ABOUT SAVING MONEY. What is spent on those employees is peanuts compared to most of the money in the government. Firing federal employees sows confusion, depletes morale, and degrades government service.

Firings at the NSF included permanent employees who had already completed their one-year probationary period, as well as at-will workers.

ACTION THIS WEDNESDAY: Researchers from New York universities are holding a rally to protest the funding cuts at Washington Square Park at 4 pm. This will be part of a national day of action, with rallies at HHS in DC and all around the country. RSVP HERE: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...

State AGs are looking for federal workers who have just been illegally fired to stand as litigants in a new lawsuit trying to freeze further action by DOGE. DM me if that’s you and you’re interested and you’re live in one of the following states: NM, AZ, CA, CT, MD, MI, MN, NV, OR, WA, RI, or VT.

This is a brilliant analysis of our constitutional crisis. Somehow, we must find a way to explain this to millions of Americans who digest information in soundbites and tweets. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/16/o...

Also, part of what she left us is a message: Writing is resistance. Joy is resistance. Appreciating nature is resistance.

“Not often is it given to a generation to be able to change the course of events in ways that may significantly affect the future. Yet this is at once the privilege and responsibility of us who live today.” Rachel Carson writing in opposition to businesses downplaying and discrediting science. 1963.

I'm a reporter at the SF Chronicle hoping to speak with scientists who were impacted by the government firings. Specifically NOAA scientists, especially those in California. Open to hearing from you on the record, off the record or anonymously. email: [email protected] DMs open

Here’s the thing: federal research monies - including grants and their “indirects” pay for: buildings, infrastructure, utilities… but also people who ensure compliance with laws, people who ensure safety of students, staff & faculty, people who purchase supplies and manage budgets…. PEOPLE! (1/2)

The real "geostrategic importance of Greenland to U.S. interests" is that the Greenland ice sheet is melting, with consequences that will drown parts of Ted Cruz's state. But I doubt that will come up at this hearing.

The main DEI page from @agu.org has been modified to take diversity out of the title. Glad to see it's not deleted entirely, but hey AGU, we're watching what you do and remembering the big game you once talked about supporting your diverse membership. Today vs. January

People who are concerned about their government should absolutely call their representative, no matter what party they are. That's the only way some members will hear that their constituents are pissed that Musk is breaking parts of the government that impact their lives.
