In my continuing effort to better understand our current historical moment, I picked up a copy of Guy Debord’s “The Society of the Spectacle” (1967). He opens part one of the text with this epigraph from the preface to “The Essence of Christianity” (1841) by German philosopher Ludwig Feuerbach.

The trade war started by the U.S. is an opportunity for the rest of the world to strengthen their other alliances and build economies that exclude the U.S. from the equation, which will hasten the long-term decline of U.S. relevance in the global economy as well as the U.S. economy itself.
