This pattern of movement is also known as the 5 petals of Venus, or pentagram of Venus, because it shows the 5 synodic cycles that occur within the 8-year period. The path of the rose. May you see roses in the stars and stars in the roses. 🌹✨

In Mesopotamian art we often see Inanna with an 8-pointed star, as we see much later in Pamela Coleman Smith's depiction of The Star card. Perhaps this symbol references Venus' 8-year cycle of movement, in which the planet returns to the same celestial location every 8 years, as observed from earth.

"These were not dainty roses bred from a hot house but heavily armoured wild thickets that came down to Mesopotamia from the Zagros mountains approximately 10,000 years ago."

Long before she was known as Venus she was Inanna, the Mesopotamian goddess of the erotic and also war. Inanna is habitually associated with roses, most likely of the wild briar or dog rose varieties featuring 5 petals. 🌹

The King of Cups asks, Where you are storing your desires? Your skills? How do you get to those places? Maybe it's through writing, laughing with friends, or watching films. How will you channel the desires and abilities you store into creation?

In addition to a cup, the King of Cups holds a scepter, linking him to the energy of spirit/fire. In this card, currents of emotion, ideas, and purpose, pour into the same cup, like tributaries into the sea, to become creative expression. ⬇️

A catchment vessel transforms the kinetic energy of water into the energy of potential, fixes it into a force that can be channeled as needed, the way a ship makes use of a current. ⬇️

The King of Cups is a vessel. A vessel can be a ship that rides water, or a container that holds it. Both instances are concerned with directing water into a useful form. There are many types of vessels - rainbarrel, basin, carafe, bottle - because we have many uses for water. ⬇️

sometimes finding unity with a cause we believe in means dividing/divesting from the causes we do not. Maybe in tuning to a new chord, we establish better harmony.

The 6 of Swords ask us what unknowns we are meeting right now. How can memory be a resource as we move forward?
comment in response to post
In 6 of Swords, we take our burdens (swords/memories) with us. In 8 of Cups, we leave them (cups/emotional attachments) and the familiar behind. In both cards, a decision has been made to move forward, into the unknown.⬇️

A trusty staff, sacred conduit between the magic within ourselves and the world without, accompanies both travelers. With the 8 of Cups it's a walking stick, a grounding influence in a watery realm. With the 6 of Swords, it's an oar, steering a course through a vast expanse.⬇️

In both cases we see journeys, over water to land. The figures are retreating, seen from behind and in the 8 of Cups, even the water is retreating, caught at low tide. The mood is somber and the water, symbol of the unconscious mind, is calm. ⬇️
