This weekend's reading. The Byline Times website is reported to have been suffering from a DDOS attack. Someone doesn't like us reading their articles. So buy a copy. Or subscribe and they'll post it to you. 👇👇

Here's one of the warnings I gave in an article before the US election. It's devastating to see it all happening. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Care experienced children and adults have been championing change through self-led groups and organisations since the 1970s. Shouldn’t it now be the norm for care experienced people to be in the majority at policy-making tables. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Thank you kids. "Dozens of American students at a U.S. military installation in Germany walked out of their middle school on Tuesday as part of protests aimed at an official visit by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth...." www.washingtonpost.com/national-sec...

Denying refugees citizenship simply on the grounds that they arrived here “illegally” on small boats *when there are no legal routes* for most to use takes cynicism to new heights. If Govt thinks such performative cruelty will see off Reform, they’re wrong - it’s more likely to strengthen it

Liz Kendall, the work and pensions secretary, has been criticised for saying that some people claiming sickness and disability benefits are “taking the mickey”. Maybe enoble all the people claiming such benefits so they can claim the £350 a day attendance allowance in the House of Lords.

Judge rules that Black church in DC, which won a $2.8 million default judgment against the Proud Boys, now gains control over the trademark “Proud Boys.” The far-right group is barred from selling any related merchandise or symbols without the consent of the church. Gift link:

I wrote about government plans for the deprivation of liberty of looked after children (Clause 10 of the Children's Wellbeing and Schools Bill): thebarristergroup.co.uk/blog/clause-...

This is a fabulous programme.

And this. It's happening Reg.

www.theguardian.com/technology/2... This is the future, legitimising the fascists.

This.

Pity Farage wasn’t asked about this - he should be forced to own it @bbclaurak.bsky.social @theneweuropean.bsky.social

The word used by Labour to describe the Badger cull yet it still goes on. Please sign the petition for the cull to end: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/70...

NEW: Children's Wellbeing and Schools Bill Our initial analysis of the Bill was published this morning. Sorry we cannot join the chorus of congratulations. We expect so much more for children and young people. article39.org.uk/childrenswel...

www.theguardian.com/education/20... DfE have ducked this for decades.

“The last Conservative government condoned zero tolerance behaviour regimes in schools, but [the education secretary] Bridget Phillipson is passionate about children’s welfare. I imagine her team were horrified by these disturbing stories.” www.theguardian.com/education/20...

www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2024... All this talk of prison building, build one for this lot.

www.theguardian.com/environment/... Yay. We winned.

www.theguardian.com/football/202... Good time for the FA to announce that England will not participate. To attend would make a mockery of all the rainbow armband stuff.

The culture secretary said it was clear the TV industry had a “major problem” with diversity, given the last survey on class found only 8% of people in the industry were self-defined as working-class compared with around 45-50% of the population. Wonder how many MPs are working class?

www.theguardian.com/society/2024... Good to see Dr Andy Knox mentioned in this. He has done some pioneering work. www.bozpublications.com/sick-society

www.theguardian.com/society/2024... Poverty is a political choice whether by choice (austerity) or by simply ignoring it (most governments). I would have hoped a @teamlabouruk.bsky.social government would take action.

www.theguardian.com/politics/202... It's really not getting any better is it.

Sounds sensible to extend corporate parenting principles to government departments, right? Wrong. Read why we don’t support the Home Office and others becoming ‘corporate parents’ of children in care, and more here: article39.org.uk/labour-gover...

Why do we even have a ‘market’ for homes for children who rely on the state for parenting? A new government should go back to first principles: ❓What do children need throughout their childhood and adult lives? ❓What are the risks for children in perpetuating a privatised ‘care system’?

Looks like the social work crew are starting to arrive on here, so I've had a first go at making a starter pack. Let me know if you want adding on, plenty of room for everyone! go.bsky.app/56PBom2

Today is a big day for children's services in the UK. Finally, change is coming. Whether it is deep enough, wide enough and broad enough, I believe is essentially down to us. #socialwork #childrensservices #childrenincare www.gov.uk/government/n...

NEW: Government urged to end the wilful neglect of teenagers in care. Timeline showing how last government reversed the strong, cross-party political consensus that children in care aged 16 and 17 should not have to fend for themselves. #KeepCaringTo18 article39.org.uk/2024/11/18/g...

Truly delighted with this review of Free Loaves on Fridays, by the inimitable Jim Goddard. . With 100 authors and a no-rejection policy, this book really could have been an editorial nightmare. But it turned out inspired. Open access. Link below: www.celcis.org/application/...
