That was an awesome reminder of how important accessibility is for *all* of us - wouldn't have gotten the joke without alt text πŸ˜…

Feel this πŸ˜‘ Every day I wonder if 15 year old me would be happy with who I am today. Jury is still out.

Seriously, never wanted to move to Europa more than now. I would have picked Mars but I want Musk for a neighbor like I want another hole in my head (and one planet isn't big enough for the two of us). The clown show has boarded the Hindenburg and apparently we're all invited along.

Totally agree that this is pretty much level with prior administrations πŸ‘πŸ‘ Maybe that's why I'm so disappointed - I wish we'd find someone to lead who was willing to step up and out of the morass. But politics is full of strange bedfellows, perhaps I'm making light of how hard it actually is.

Oh my gosh, right? It's like watching a drunk friend get in a fight with a brick wall. You know it's what they want, but you also know they're going to lose in the long run.

I definitely don't want to poke, so I apologize if I'm misinterpreting, but lying on a handgun application is perjury, which is a pretty big deal. Also, TIL if you bounce a check to the IRS, they can issue you a 100% penalty on the amount owed. I wish I could avoid taxes - how did Hunter do it?

I think it's more complicated than that, but I get that it's in the Zeitgeist. Americans are genuinely struggling and I don't think many have the perception that Biden did much to help (even though his hands might have been tied). That said, nothing like 4 years of suffering to change your mind.

That's a really good point - I'm not a huge fan of our prison system either 😬 I genuinely hope neither of us have to face that situation. Perhaps I am being too insensitive about the consequences in this situation πŸ€” If Biden was my neighbor (not POTUS), I imagine I would hope for his son's pardon.

Ladder... πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ That's what I get for using voice to text.

My understanding is that he was convicted on three separate firearms charges and several counts of tax evasion. I think he pled guilty to the ladder set of charges, but fought the allegations of illegal possession of firearms in court but was found guilty. Am I missing anything?

I agree that it does not validate any of the future cock-ups of the incoming Trump administration. But I very much believe it is a pivotal moment in that it destroys Biden's credibility and further impairs the ability of Democrats to bring more into the party.

I suppose the answer to that would depend on how many others are persecuted for tax evasion and perjury. His crimes were not immaterial. The reason why may not be palatable, but he benefited greatly from the same exposure that was eventually also his downfall.

Not enough that I'll bite on that one. If you can show me any data that supports "anyone else would get to slap on the wrist" for lying on a federal form designed to keep the rest of us safe from an emotionally unstable drug abuser with a gun, I definitely will take it back.

The justification that the Bidens have suffered ignores the fact that so many other families are powerless in the face of overreach by DAs who are "tough on crime." Hunter received the best defense anyone could have in his situation but he was still found guilty in a court of law. What's unfair?

Pish posh, no worries! This is the internet, you should get to say what you're thinking πŸ˜… Maybe that's the difference - I would visit my son every single day I could if he was in prison. But if he was convicted of a crime, I would have to let someone more impartial decide if he deserved a pardon.

Very valid point. But from my perspective, he needed to keep his nose clean (hah) and follow the rules, just like the rest of us. A higher profile made him a target, but it also afforded him wealth and opportunity none of us will ever see. How does pardoning a guy like this help America?

Perhaps the most of any in Washington, but I feel like that's a pretty short yardstick. The GOP has sold its soul to the devil and they will reap the reward. But jumping off the cliff just because they're doing it is for the Lemmings. I wish we were better than this.

Fine, but only because you've shaped my childhood and forced me to think about how to be a better person. Well, and also because you're probably the best voice actor I've ever heard.

I feel like there's an awesome energy in that intent, but for it to be effective for us, it needs to be directed at a goal that lifts us all up out of the mess. This is just stirring the pot - I get the sense that Biden is bitter about his failures during the election cycle.

Sorry, using hell as a euphemism for regrets on your deathbed. Totally agree that the GOP has manipulated the public and used double speak for the past decade. But given that, how does pardoning Hunter further a democratic goal? America is in pain, not just the Biden family.
comment in response to post
If we were in a vacuum with Hunter Biden, that would be the entire fact set. But we're not. Cherry-picking admittedly, but where is Biden's action on clemency for death row inmates, for example? It's not the Biden family that is suffering here. It's the rest of America. This was a selfish play.

There's no rules in politics. That's a fallacy that has plagued our party for years. Besides, Hunter is no role model and his situation has contributed nothing productive to political discourse. Biden blew the election, why would the party support this last gasp?

It's not about following the rules, it's about advancing a platform that is morally, ethically and socially beneficial. Eschewing nepotism is a basic tenet of this approach. Don't get me wrong, I loathe Trump & Co. But who wants to share a hot tub in hell with them when your time comes?

Because it starts or accelerates a race to the bottom. This doesn't bode well for the democratization of our floundering democracy.
