It was indeed startling to visit the US and find out they have such outdated tech everywhere.

Not in Australia.
I had to go look up what it meant. Foreign enough to me that I hadn't a clue.

If you do the nazi salute "as a joke", it is still the nazi salute, and everyone still saw you being a nazi.

That has got to have happened to a mook in a Bond film at least once?

Measles wasn't eradicated worldwide. Someone travelled overseas, or worked in an airport, or similar, or bought something from overseas. We are a worldwide species these days. Maybe a returning military worner brought it back.

That is amazing.

Lots of animals have long lifespans. I met an 80-yr-old Funnel Web spider once.
Is this an albatross? There are wild wandering albatross known to have lived 50 years. I believe that might be longer than the species name we have for some albatross?

That depends entirely on whether you expect them to buy it. In my undergraduate course, I had several expensive compulsory texts that were not available in the library as there were 900 of us and ten copies of the text. I couldn't buy it 2nd hand as it "updated" each year. I resented that professor.

OMG it's The Newsreader!

Bloody brilliant period piece set in Victoria. So sodding clever. His hair isn't long in the show though.

There are so many clever little side stories in the movie. Every time I watch it I see something more.
Never seen the stage production but I bet if is just as good.

You certainly deserve joy.

I am told a majority of you didn't vote for the guy in charge, either. That doesn't seem to be working out too good...

My god I am so sorry.
I have had many of my students transition to work and every one of them was a delightful win for society, for the student, and for their new workplace. I hope a work solution can be solved for your daughter soon, and I hope she and you will manage in the meantime.

Yeah even the disgusting rapist sympathiser Dutton has said Trump is wrong about Ukraine. Which is nice.

I am told that mine are a non-USian viewpoints. Americans just edit in their things again.
So these days I sometimes put a source in a talk page, and leave it at that. They have always censored Wikipedia, it has always only shown only Amerigocentric views, so best not to try to interfere with it.

Nah, only stuff I ever added to Wikipedia was always removed. Even if I add sources. It all just reverts again a few minutes or an hour later back to what it was.

Awh. Etymology seems missing.
One of the best things about the word goon is that it is a rare example of an aboriginal word becoming mainstream (goon is an aboriginal word for bag or sack) and the article seems to leave that out. Sad!

I love this book, greatly told, brilliant characterisation, clever story, lovely deities. A sweet little book.
It's a pity everything else she wrote (including the sequel) falls so horribly flat (at best) for me.

Well done for your tap repair!
Honestly, as an Aussie, never seen or heard of a freezer miser before, as even in snow it never hurt our water supply here, but it looks like a clever contraption.

I'm surprised that a _carpet_ shop, of all places, decided that the closest thing they had in the entire store was a twister mat.

Giant thread about giant pizza is good. You should take all your stories, and put them together into a book sometime.
The Bigfoot Pizza made it here to Oz. It had mixed results; Many people liked the size, but no one wanted trodden-on pizza, which is what "bigfoot" sounded like to Australian ears.

What makes it not real? The idiot and his DOGE were appointed by their president, wasn't it? And made official and stuff?
This sounds rude but I genuinely don't know how American departments work. What did they not do?

Investing, travelling...
Before they elected that idiot, we were discussing another trip into the US for events. Now it is a question of which European conventions are looking promising. The US used to have a tourism industry. That probably isn't doing good things for their economy either...

Three potatoes and a broomstick.
Get one all the way up. Use the stick. Then stick one just inside. Then stick the third on the outside of the pipe where the driver can see it. Then back off, they gonna be pissed.

The entire length of Moon is considerably less gory than the shorts for Mickey, let alone what the actual film Mickey will be like. Similar premise though.
Recommending a film like that to someone who already said they don't want to see that sort of thing seems a little mean, btw.

In case you’re wondering how I imagine Jesus responding to a queer pride event, I’ll just share one of my favorite poems (by @jayhulmepoet.bsky.social) and his theological explanation for it: jayhulme.com/blog/jesus-a...
