More Urban Shadows 2e: Players can gain Status with different Circles. At the highest level you start your own faction. This gives the player access to the GM's faction turn mechanics, allowing them to directly control their faction during downtime. OSR, take note! This is the domain play I want!

This is exactly what I needed to see this morning.

Gonna run Urban Shadows 2e, so I'm finally reading the rules. I love how advancement works. To advance you have to interact with each of the different supernatural circles of the city at least once (Mortalis, Night, Wild, and Power). It really pushes that interconnected political drama vibe.

Am I weird for not being a dice goblin? I haven't bought new dice in at least a decade. I just grab whichever dice are nearby and I've certainly never put a die in "dice jail".

This isn't entirely true. Addition is better than subtraction. And if your RPG makes me do multiplication or division to make a roll I promise I will never play it.

Am I weird for not having strong opinions about TTRPG dice mechanics? I just want the game's mechanics to match the tone and content of the game. Simple dice mechanics for simple stories, complex dice mechanics when it makes sense.

Got bored, checked the timestamp, realized I had another hour of this. This movie needs less Depp and way more Bale.

Prohibition era Urban Shadows research movie one. So far, setting and story is fun but Johnny Depp is cringe. Both the actor and the character. I'm rooting for Batma- I mean Christian Bale.

Cleaned my living room and found a copy of Deathmatch Island. I had completely forgotten about buying that game. New rule: No more TTRPGs until I read all the ones I already own.

This is what I'm calling trad games from now on.

This "more is more" approach is a defining characteristic of a trad RPG. I have the same complaint about spells in 5e, powers in 4e and backgrounds in Pathfinder. I don't want 200 bland options, I want 20 really good ones.

Reading through RuneQuest. This is a classic example Lists That Are To Damn Long. We don’t need “Never use a small shield”, we just need: 1. Never eat on Fireday 2. Remain celibate 3. Speak only the truth 4. Wear no armor 5. Never bathe 6. Challenge Yelmalio’s enemies on sight #ttrpg

One of my biggest TTRPG pet peeves is when mechanics are buried inside paragraphs. This wall of text is interesting, but the most important part is buried in the middle of the sixth paragraph.

Putting together a research watch list: Public Enemies (2009) The Roaring Twenties (1939) The Funeral (1996) The Public Enemy (1931) Once Upon a Time in America (1984, full version) Millers Crossing (1990)

Accidentally looked at my Facebook feed. God damn that place is a shit show.

Planning has started for my next TTRPG campaign: An Urban Shadows game set in prohibition era Chicago. Step one is watch a bunch of gangster movies. And one musical.

Tell me what's going on in your WIP right now using only a gif.

FACTS

But Victor, I hear you say, what about a sandbox? That's not constrained, the player have the agency to go anywhere! Is your sandbox a hex crawl? Does the hex map have edges? I guarantee the players are not going to travel off the edge of the map. BOOM. That's a constrained narrative space.
