Thistlebloom Farm was built in 1860. It has over 77 acres of mixed land, a house, 2 barns and a shed. It is located on Nipmuc and Pocumtuck land (aka Amherst, MA). Sometimes the farm and its current guardian have arguments.

BREAKING: France, Germany, Poland, Italy, Spain & UK sign a joint statement vowing to protect Ukraine’s sovereignty & demanding a role in the peace talks. This is leadership. It’s also unprecedented. A western alliance is having to form against a new, twin & united threat: Trump & Putin.

Would love to talk to any and all academics about this for a story. DMs are open, Signal's in my bio ✌️

The battle of our day is no longer about Democrats versus Republicans or left versus right. The choice right now is democracy or dictatorship. And we're sliding faster than I ever thought possible into the latter. Everyone must choose which side they’re on. Now.

‘Even the sound of the water has changed’: can Bogotá bring its wetlands back from the brink? www.theguardian.com/global-devel...

This is how the world views the US. Australia calling out fascism, then adding that "Trump is a disaster for humanity and he belongs behind bars, not the oval office."

Nail on the head.

This aptly characterises Trump: "The selfish person is interested only in himself, wants everything for himself, feels no pleasure in giving but only in taking. The world outside is looked at only from the standpoint of what he can get out of it; he lacks interest in the needs of others." E. Fromm

The extent of sea ice globally is now at an absolute record low level for the entire satellite-era. [Graphics: zacklabe.com/global-sea-i.... Note: the poles are affected by very different Earth system processes/seasonality. I am using 5-day running mean data.]

The hens are laying like gangbusters and their eggs sell out fast. We're selling them now via Atlas Farm Store in South Deerfield, MA and Mill Valley Milk Co. in Hadley. We feed organic feed, so I'm always worried re pricing, but their retail is still well under the $10-$15 I've seen reported. 😱

They’re never going to realize how they sound.

This is a noteworthy thread for anyone affected by climate change (i.e., all of us). I'd say that farmers, in particular, should pore over it.

Having worked at the Pentagon on climate change, most of the programming is intended to make US bases resilient to climate impacts. Many of them are quite vulnerable! The combatant commands' work on climate was about how to prepare for the destabilizing impacts of climate in their regions.

Just gonna leave this here.

The federal government promised it would reimburse farmers for millions in infrastructure investments, but Trump's funding freeze just left farmers on the hook. And if Trump's tariffs go through, farmers will be in even more dire straits. A "new Golden Age" for whom?

Once again: YOU following your code of ethics should not depend on what other people are (or aren't) doing.

Email sent to all CFPB staff this morning: "Please do not perform any work tasks."

As I shared last week, the US's first National Nature Assessment has been shut down: but the authors, led by @phillevin.bsky.social, are determined to continue. Read more: www.nytimes.com/2025/02/10/c...

It may feel like we've seen a lot more wildfire recently, but it's still much less than what those ecosystems have historically produced.

International law does not permit the sale or purchase of sovereign or occupied territories... Donald Trump is a cnut.

Worried about losing access to US federal data that may go off-line, or already is? You’re not alone—but duplication isn’t the answer. Many ongoing efforts have already archived key datasets and many more are ongoing. Check out these existing resources and, if you can, support their work. 🧵

“…Google's widely-used CAPTCHA system is primarily a mechanism for tracking user behavior and collecting data while providing little actual security against bots.”

New: We spoke to government IT employees/contractors about DOGE. Their warnings were dire. The people who maintain the systems that keep the country working are terrified. "This is the largest data breach and the largest IT security breach in our country’s history—at least that’s publicly known."

More bad news, at a time when it could be argued that we're downplaying the short-term role of methane in contributing to yet more warming and climate feedbacks. Over the next decade or so, methane is actually causing more warming than CO2 (see for instance bsky.app/profile/siol...)

~Another~ new paper suggesting climate sensitivity is higher than we thought. When climate scientists are "stunned" / "mystified" by rates of warming, maybe it's because we've had a crucial input wrong: climate sensitivity. agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/...

"In total, the U.S. Agency for International Development, or USAID, last year purchased $2 billion in U.S.-grown crops from corn and soybeans to wheat, sorghum, vegetable oil and peas. Minnesota, Iowa and Wisconsin farmers were among those selling their crops to the program."

Did you miss this inspiring and positive webinar on how science can inform decisions for a better future (and how each of us can help)? If so, no worries: the recording is available here!

This is a great piece for anyone looking for help or (especially) ways to help 👇

In light of Trump II’s first 18 days of mayhem — including his and Musk’s coup against our system of government — many are asking: “What can I do now?” Here’s a revised and expanded list, in rough order of importance.

Here's a snapshot of what this warm event looks like in map form. Most of the Barents Sea will be above freezing through the weekend. 🧪

A new study shows that a vegan diet is better than any other diet for greenhouse gas emissions & land use in Ireland - as per similar results found in all other Global North countries (and most of the world). In Ireland it's also third best for water use. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Destroying NOAA would cause unquantifiable damage not only to the U.S. but also to anyone around the world relying on their data and models. Tragic.

Good! Though we'll have to adapt quickly (since we haven't yet bothered to do so), this ultimately benefits everyone except those addicted to the fossil fuel industry. Time to check on the progress of affordable electric tractors...

To America’s 2.3 million federal employees: Don’t accept a buyout. Neither Musk nor even Trump has the legal authority to make such an offer. And even if they did, would you trust them to follow through on it? Sincerely, Robert Reich Former U.S.Secretary of Labor

GHG emissions from the German LULUCF sector have gone from around neutral to a large source! The change is almost entirely in forest land. "Due to the years of drought, around two million hectares of trees have been damaged and some have died completely." www.thuenen.de/en/thuenen-t... 1/

Damn right!

USAID was investigating Elon Musk’s Starlink contracts in Ukraine 👀 Also, can we agree that it's pronounced U-S Aid and not U-S-A-I-D?

The news getting you down? I invite you to stare at this chart of solar and wind deployed capacity in China. They blew past their ambitious 2030 target... last July.

Ask any toxicologist and they'll tell you "dose makes the poison". And so, right now, our bodies are currently being filling with a petrochemical compound - and it's no longer a question of if, but rather when will the plastics accumulating in our bodies start causing mass and widespread suffering?

Yesterday, I returned from 3 weeks in Costa Rica, where I went to find out what can be learned from their spectacular success rewilding a country. I cannot overstate how awe-inspiring the trip was: nature loss CAN be reversed on a huge scale, benefiting *everyone*.
