Really important and moving account of state failure in this weekend's @financialtimes.com that is free to read for all here:

'People like us don't become writers.' Tell me about it! I am *still* so often the only working-class person in one of these rooms. And it is *not* getting easier. www.theguardian.com/culture/2025...

Well there goes the worst kept secret in UK EU relations, as I've been saying since June 2024. Of course the UK was going to respond to the EU ask over youth mobility. Might have been easier to say from the start that of course we'll look at EU asks?

Peter Kellner's article in @theneweuropean.bsky.social sets out the issues that Brexit has caused to the British economy before hitting this key argument: The problems come from being a third country. 1

This is by far the best article on Brexit reset I have read. John A Clarke knows what he is talking about from years of experience. He is correct on why the Single Market is of interest for UK over a customs union, and realistic on the decade long schedule for rejoining. Labour needs a new raft!

So the MD of M&S Food never understood & still does not understand what UK (Brexit) asked for? On "is still painfully slow" ("higher cost & reduced choice") this is price of trading across regulatory & customs borders between DIFFERENT legally regulated & customs territories 1/6

🚨🚨 Characteristically sound work by @rafaelbehr.bsky.social here addressing the slowly dragging EU-UK "reset" which is clearly lacking the urgency on both sides of the channel needed for making any real substantial progress on policy. #brexit 🧵 www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

As an immigrant who chose to make my home in the UK—but also as someone who is a migration historian and researches the impact of dog-whistle politics—there is no way for me to overstate how wrong and disgusting these ads by the UK Labour Party are. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

Great explainer on the pros and cons of UK joining a/the EU customs union. There are benefits for GB-NI and cross-border trade. The loss of trade sovereignty would impact this and future governments in negotiating trade deals.

Sigh!! I am not a Cassandra . I am not unique in knowing this was always going to happen. (FoM cheaper prices & more choice) Flow or Control. You can't have (Brexit) both. You're all being let down by your complicit & culpable MSM journalists & politicians www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Trump’s Gaza power-trip tells us this: he is just another coward denying the need for a Palestinian state | Simon Tisdall

Seriously, this has to be one of the stupidest things I've heard from a Labour MP in this parliament - and possibly ever.

I worry that politicians often appear to not understand the nuts & bolts of CU v SM & what each achieves (or doesn’t do). This is likely to result in onward confusion in the minds of citizens & disappointment, even tho’ some improvement is achieved, when red tape still creates post Brexit barriers

When Laura K insists rejoining the EU wouldn't bring growth for the UK as EU countries on average don't grow much atm, it is (deliberately?) misleading. The UK's economy can of course grow if trade with EU countries increases, no matter how well they are doing for themselves.

This is, by some distance, the most unforgivably stupidest thing the government is doing. An easily sellable proposal, which would actually help Brits, and unlocks meaningful negotiation. Irrational and anti-growth.
