American politics makes a lot more sense when you realize that the GOP is afraid of pissing off the GOP base, and the Dems are afraid of pissing off the GOP base, but neither party is afraid of pissing off the Dem base.

Something odd here. CBS News confirms other media reports: "Hegseth has issued a directive to U.S. Cyber Command to pause planning against Russia, including offensive digital actions." The CBS News then notes that National Security Advisor Michael Waltz said he's unaware of the directive.

Medicaid covers... -40% of births nationwide -50% of kids with special needs -72 million people in total Remember this as Republicans move to gut the program to finance tax cuts that will overwhelmingly go to the richest 1% of Americans.  "Party of family values."

18F was dissolved because it saved money. We pushed back against contractors who tried to screw American taxpayers. We showed how cheap and good government software can be. Musk hates that. writing by Dan Tangherlini via @donmoyn.bsky.social

Auschwitz was at the end of a long process. It did not start from gas chambers. This hatred was gradually developed by humans. From ideas, words, stereotypes & prejudice through legal exclusion, dehumanization & escalating violence... to systematic and industrial murder. Auschwitz took time.

Awful news --> Delivery of therapeutic food assistance to nearly 400,000 severely malnourished kids abroad is suddenly in doubt due to Trump-Musk firings at USAID, two manufacturers of the product tell me. "Starving children are waiting," one says. New from me: newrepublic.com/article/1919...

Luke Farritor is not “letting them die”, he is actively breaking the law and withholding life saving meds from the most vulnerable. He is actively killing people on Musk’s orders. This is a death squad. We won’t forget his face or his crimes. #vlakplas #doge #warcrimes

If you wanted to cut waste, fraud, and abuse, you would empower the inspectors general. If you wanted more waste, fraud, and abuse, you would fire them.

The flying public needs answers. How many FAA personnel were just fired? What positions? And why?

#Measles is one of the leading causes of death among young children globally. In 2023, an estimated 107 500 people died from measles, mostly children under age 5. bit.ly/48SAtkf

The gene therapy Zolgensma helped children born with spinal muscular atrophy grow up to run and play. But the cost was stunning: $2M per dose. While taxpayers and small charities funded the drug’s early development, executives, venture-capital backers and a pharma giant have reaped the profits.

This comment on r/fednews really stood out to me. Trump and Musk want people to think they're firing do-nothing "bureaucrats," but they're really getting rid of people dedicated to serving this country and keeping it operational. I hope these stories get told.

Sassoon is no leftie. She clerked for *Scalia*.

The House Science Committee is now adopting its rules, authorization, and oversight plan, and introducing their new staffers. Immediately following, there will be a hearing on the future of U.S. science with the president of AAAS and two former Trump officials in academia and Trump operative.

I think some people hear “grants” and think that without them, scientists and government workers just have less stuff to play with at work. But grants fund salaries for students, academics, researchers, and people who work in all areas of public service. “Pausing” grants means people don’t eat.

Many of you may not be familiar with #NIH grants. Here are some facts to help you understand the magnitude of this disaster. 1) NIH grants are extremely difficult to get & not "free money". Researchers must have preliminary data & write detailed proposals. Mine was >200pages & took years to put

70% of the world’s population has universal healthcare, but not the US We are the only highly developed nation without it Our healthcare is twice as expensive as the average wealthy nation US ranks last among industrial nations for deaths that could be prevented with timely access to healthcare

A good and compassionate set of articles regarding how municipalities are hindering homeless people by taking their posessions during sweeps, even sometimes leaving them without what they need for proper ID or tools (like an ebike for a doordash worker) to lift themselves out of their situation.

This is a deeply vulnerable & personal piece my wife Ayesha & I wrote about our daughter & the incurable disease she lives with. We wrote it not because her story is special—but because it is all too common. This torture must end. Please read & share your story: www.qasimrashid.com/p/when-insur...

💯Clean air delivery rate (CADR) is more important than HEPA rating! I have been buying portable air cleaners for the lab and home that are not HEPA-level but offer a high CADR per dollar spent and low noise. Marwa Zaatari's comparison chart from 2021 is a good way to think about this.
