I'll tell you one thing. Of all the things you mentioned, only thing giving me pause is the religious aspect.
The most important thing in Christianity is forgiveness. To really be a Christian, I'd have to be able to forgive even someone like Breivik. But the very thought makes me want to vomit...π

You keep saying "state" like it's some entity separate from the people. In a true democracy the state *is* of the people. And at the beginning of this discussion my proposed scenario was jurors determining if death penalty is warranted.
Killing Putin is no different. It just skips the trial part.

As a vegan I believe in both human & animal rights.
I also believe humans forfeit their rights, if they commit heinous acts that cause the cold-blooded death of their fellow humans.
Let me ask you, if you had a chance to kill Putin and end the war killing thousands, would you not do it?

Maybe you're right, idk π all I know is it pains me deeply to know what victims and their families go thru. All the young people Breivik killed, the children massacred in Beslan school in 2004 Russia, & so many victims here in America. Feels wrong to let mass murderers live out their lives.

Already addressed the issue of human rights in the other comment.
As for religion...I do consider myself a Christian. Killing is a sin. Plus as a vegan i value all animal life. That said, if I were the one to exact justice on, say, Breivik, I'd be willing to face judgment for it in the afterlife.

I mean, obviously we have a difference of opinion on the matter. I don't believe someone like Anders Breivik deserves human rights. I believe he forfeited his human rights when he decided to massacre 77 people in cold blood.

They like to act like they voted for Mitt Romney or some regular Republican like that. Literally everything this guy is saying is "fucked up" is how Trump is.

Regarding Breivik, it's not about the economics. I mentioned his living conditions not to indicate cost, which Norway can afford, but to indicate the lack of anything close to reciprocal justice in that arrangement.
Dude absolutely deserves to die. Instead, he's out here suing the government.
comment in response to

It's not revenge. Revenge is personal, one person getting retribution on another.
This is "reciprocal justice" where not the victims (or the families) but their fellow citizens decide what is a fair punishment for the crime exacted upon them.

But I do have an example from Europe. Anders Breivik in Norway killed 77 people, 69 of them at a youth camp, and was sentenced to 15 years in prison. That is an injustice. And it gets worse when you see the type of prisons they have there. His cell is basically luxurious.

I appreciate EU countries don't have capital punishment, but they're also for the most part free of some of the ills that plague the US, even before Trump. Mainly due to the insane level of the availability of firearms in this country.

Remember, I said earlier let's assume this is happening in context of an otherwise stable, democratic government.

Putting aside the "problem" of incarcerating a mass shooter, paying for their room & board for however many years...
...the main reason is to ensure that justice is served. What "justice" means to you and me might not be the same thing, but 12 jurors could deliberate and come to a decision.

You're making assumptions that are not necessary.
Assailant's mental capacity, or lack there of, would be determined at trial. Jury takes everything into account when delivering verdict & determining punishment.
And mass shooters are often fully aware of and quite intentional about their actions.

Assume this in context of an otherwise stable, democratic government.
Jury is comprised of 12 regular citizens who find the accused guilty, and decide the only punishment that fits the crime is capital punishment.
Tbh in my mind I'm thinking mostly of mass shooters who make it to the courtroom.

Do you have an answer for the earlier question though? What if the decision on punishment was left up to the jury to decide, along with the verdict?

I disagree.

She wasn't convicted for insider trading at all. It was for "lying to the FBI" which was, ironically, a trumped up accusation.
