NYT is doing an inverse Niemöller. First they came for trans folks, and I did nothing— because it wasn't consequential. Then they came for DEI, and I did nothing— because I thought undoing civil rights would have a positive impact.

As a poor kid at a rich school, I encountered just this sort of abusive asshole all the time. Kids who'd try to buy their way into relationships/friendships and then demand their marks be constantly thankful, obsequious, and mindless. Somehow Vance is both the abuser and the lickspittle toady.

New from me at @thebulwark.bsky.social on the Oval Office fiasco

Today is a reminder of Zelensky's superhuman stamina and strength. He deflected deeply unfair vile attacks in his 3rd language and kept it together while two bullies threatened his country's existence and repeated the tired but infuriating propaganda tropes of the aggressor.

I can't stop laughing at this man I'm sorry. This is the kind of shit the biggest loser in the world would say to their girlfriend about buying her flowers on Valentine's Day once, and he's doing so in an argument that started because he called her a bitch

"The Post’s editorial decisions have nothing to do with my relationship with Donald Trump, and everything to do with what’s best for America. Namely, the dismantling of our constitutional rights and democratic institutions."

@lolgop.bsky.social: Zelenskyy is all of us...the lone individual taking on the spirit of his community, which put its faith in him through democratic governance. Putin is the epitome of the billionaires who seek to rule us. He offers nothing but his boot on necks. open.substack.com/pub/thecause...

On the US siding with Russia against Ukraine and Europe, I’m as appalled as anyone, but my reaction to the shock and surprise is “it’s about time you caught up.” Trump’s Putin sympathy, along with Vance’s, Musk’s, and MAGA media’s, has been consistent. Finally now others’ wishful thinking can stop.

If you stand with Trump, you stand with Putin. If you stand with Ukraine, you stand with the WORLD.

Traditionally the right wing evisceration of government has come with somber head shaking from otherwise Good People about how it's too expensive. Now it's being done by a grinning moron who waves a chainsaw around on stage. If you're a liberal politician your job will never be easier than this

“If academic freedom in teaching & in scholarship can be overridden by the dicta of politicians & administrators, then the right to learn will not survive our present moment.” Read AAUP President Todd Wolfson’s full letter to Governor Hochul on CUNY interference here: www.aaup.org/news/governo...

‘If only Zelensky had been a good boy and not challenged Trump and Vance on their lies and attacks, the US wouldn’t abandon him and capitulate to Russia’ is not the best take.

So DuckDuckGo has an 'AI assistant' now. For feck's sake. People don't use your search engine because they want an energy-and-resource-hungry piece of software to give them inaccurate search results. Read the room, guys.

Turning off any quoting or replying to say fuck Donald Trump for lying to this woman. Easy to blame her for buying the lie, much harder to live in empathy. Having gone through IVF in my life, I know the desperation it creates and fuck Donald Trump for lying to people who need the truth the most.

If one guy holds most of the tech people rely on, it is a vulnerability, but also it's one guy: as a global population we should be able to easily just take it from him, so it seems to me the real vulnerability is an internalized belief that private ownership is more sacrosanct than human thriving.

There are 3 people in this photo. One is a true President and currently the leader of the free world. One is drooping and looks like he’s about to take a nap. And one looks a little too excited to be sitting on a couch.

Dusting off my old Oxford English Dictionary and consulting carefully, I could not find "attack friends and submit to enemies" as a definition of the word "strength."

Literally all he did was quote someone. Defining criticism of the government as treason is what authoritarians do. Turning a publicly funded news outlet into a state media propaganda machine is what authoritarians do.

Too late to spin this up, but every single Democratic member doing a direct-to-constituents explainer of what's happening

It's more than a little bizarre that the press was more vocal and judgmental about Biden's Afghanistan withdrawal than the current unscheduled rapid disassembly of our entire democracy and civil service.

The white house has never in my lifetime felt smaller and so powerless

He thinks he's immune from prosecution. But robbing the same bank twice doesn't mean double jeopardy prevents you from being charged the second time— even if you weren't found guilty (or had the case dropped) after the first heist. Stealing them a second time is a second crime.

There are many good answers to this, but "Don't go" and "Boycott" are not among them. This is television. Television is one of the only things Trump cares about. Don't allow that room to be filled only with his admirers. Shout back, disrupt, challenge, boo, fight. Mess up his show and make it yours.

This whole thing was a deliberate set-up, and the real audience for it was not the American people. It was the global fascist movement.

The federal civilian worker payroll totaled $271 billion in 2022.  The annual cost of permanently extending Trump's tax cuts that primarily benefited rich individuals? $400 billion.  Keep this in mind as Trump and DOGE lay off thousands of federal workers.

This man is beneath contempt.

The attack on DEI shows why liberals should stop arguing about "strategic" use of language forever. DEI stands for three uncontroversial virtues that most every American accepts, and the right still turned it into a vile slur. It doesn't matter what you say - they will poison it because YOU said it.

This is also why I think it is a mistake for universities and corporations to simply re-brand DEI policies. They need to defend the underlying principles (integration is good, diversity makes us better) rather than trying to outrun a fascist assault that will be trained on the re-brand

I'm in the people need to take action camp. So if this resonates I'm all for. That said, we also need to get organized and join durable political homes. So boycott AND join your local DSA, Indivisible, labor or tenant union, Sunrise chapter, AAUP, the Debt Collective, etc

The Whitehouse repackaged already public information about the Epstein case and redacted it before sending it out. It was already circulating unredacted for years in official US court documents. Once again... say it with us... MAGA got played.

who told this pampered asshole he has the right to speak to anyone like this?

Watching Putin’s little stooges try to bully Zelenskyy in our goddamned White House is pretty repulsive.

Mike Johnson - you better get your boys here... Also, I don't know how any American can be OK with the President and Veep acting like this.

Deeply sick stuff in Oval Office just now: Trump: You've allowed yourself to be in a very bad position. You don't have the cards. Zelensky: I'm not playing cards. Trump: Yeah, you're playing cards. You're gambling with the lives of millions. Then from JD Vance: Have you said thank you once?

The DOGE Purge Isn’t About Efficiency—It’s an authoritarian tactic. I wrote a more in depth piece on the empirical evidence showing how liberal-leaning agencies are being disproportionately targeted and how this mirrors authoritarian strategies seen in Hungary and Turkey.

Bill Kristol is doing more to defend trans people than the Democratic party. Schumer and Jeffries haven't said a damn thing.

Yes, Dems could totally capitalize on the lagging economy, increasing inflation! Hello?!? Anybody there?!?

Qanon basically came true. a cabal of pedophile sex traffickers has seized control of the state news.sky.com/story/andrew...

Department of Education launched a DEI snitch portal if you want to flood it with spam. enddei.ed.gov

Between the FAA/Verizon/Starlink contract news and today's NOAA and NWS firings, remember: the privatization is the point (or one of the main ones). This is about enriching the few, not creating efficiency for the many.

there is really going to be no option but to prosecute these people the second they are out of power if we ever want a chance to fix this country

Fealty to Donald Trump will not spare you from his cruelty. It's strength — not weakness — that curbs his baser instincts. Now is the time for us to be strong.
