Happy Brexit day everybody. Five years since the uk left the eu. Here is a thread of all the benefits of leaving: 1/1

Thanks. Do get in touch if you're at #PAG32 and you'd like to chat about host pathogen co-evolution, fungi, crop genetic reservoirs, and wild crop relatives.

Christmas gardening. Pizza oven was singeing the hedge so built a surround from bricks reclaimed from what used to be our kitchen wall. Laid dry for now but will rebuild with mortar in the spring. Moved the path and created a new bed.

🚨We are HIRING! 🧪 Please repost! Lecturer/Senior lecturer in @bristolbiosci.bsky.social Priority areas: ‘Responding to anthropogenic change’ ‘Reversing the biodiversity crisis’ www.bristol.ac.uk/jobs/find/de...

New preprint by butterfly wizard @lucalivraghi.bsky.social www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... We mapped optix (again?!) as the switch gene of a natural polymorphism, this time controlling silver patches of a mountain butterfly. Gorgeous RNAi validation, evidence of selective sweeps, introgression

My Tidyverse local synteny visualizer is up on GitHub: github.com/cxli233/Tidy... GitHub page contains 2 example datasets, as well as step-by-step instruction & explanations on how it works. Details on required input data are discussed in the GitHub page. Let me know if you run into issues.

Great work from Larry and the team, and amazing resource for UK crop scientists. t.co/KUE7DuLh6j UKCropDiversity-HPC: A collaborative high-performance computing resource approach for sustainable agriculture and biodiversity conservation

I made a starter pack of speciation researchers. Please let me know if you or someone you know would like to be added. I am particularly sad that so far there are not many speciation researchers from the Global South represented. go.bsky.app/J7qDY56

Our preprint is now live! We have sequenced the genomes of three psyllid species. These insects pests transmit devastating plant diseases like 'zebra chip' in potatoes and 'carrot yellows' in carrots. 🥕 #MolecularEntomology #MPMI #PlantPathology #psyllids #liberibacter

last couple days to apply (for free! from anywhere in the world!) to the Sanger 2025 PhD Programme — Deadline: 28th November 2024 (09:00 GMT) For more info, visit www.sanger.ac.uk/about/study/...

This paper by Kadie-Ann Williams and @pleunipennings.bsky.social is a really useful resource for teaching sweeps and linked selection [my slide from lecture today] pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC...

Just posting this to #popgen Here's a link to my notes on population & quantitative genetics: github.com/cooplab/popg... Hoping to extend it more after the winter holidays, as I'm just finishing up teaching the undergrad version of class.

Gosh, this blue place is far from blue! Loving it! #Wasp StarterPack is growing - follow all these amazing waspy folk for everything waspish you could possibly imagine! Pls share😍 Want to be added? Recommend other wasp folk - science, art, photography.. anything waspish goes! go.bsky.app/3u5XkrS

Our paper, identifying all the cell types in the Drosophila melanogaster female reproductive tract (uterus, female-limited glands, sperm storage organs) is out today! We used single-nuclei RNA sequencing and a lot of in situ cross-validation www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2409850121 🪰 🧬🧪 1/n

We’re delighted to share our latest preprint from the Hogenhout lab (@saskiahogenhout.bsky.social) on the molecular mechanisms on plant-aphid interactions. Here we show how the aphid Mp10 effector protein acts as a local anaesthetic to suppress the plant perception of aphid attack
