I think there’s a lot in the fact that our generation (you’re a bit older than me) is unusual in having been kids during an unusually confident “and having solved all problems, the future will be fine“ decade. The Fukuyama Generation Sure, all kids are told to be optimistic. But the news told us too

(and particular thanks to @milkyteastudios.bsky.social for fulfilling my lifelong dream of 'being hired to write the lines of V/O dialogue that units say when you click on them')

I think “1979” with no month or day is the best bit. or maybe the “last known image before his plane exploded over Baku” pic

yes, there’s no denying that one of the Nazis’ big successes in the 30s was the projection of an image of strength. it paid dividends at Munich. but yes, there’s a credible view that it’s the extra year of buildup, and Czech plunder/industries, that turned them into the threat they were by 1939/40

it’s difficult because while that argument had its moment, it’s lately fallen out of favour because it turns out Germany *also* wasn’t ready to fight and we should’ve called the bluff it becomes a question of how much we judge chamberlain for being wrong when he maybe couldn’t have known otherwise

I think that’s fair. I don’t think he nailed the examples but the phenomenon is credible to me (particularly financial services)

but I think crucially he doesn’t say that. he also near-explicitly excludes them with “if society would noticeably change within weeks if we didn’t have them anymore” - ending unions would immediately see unrest, and as for diversity officers, well, erm, the US is doing that and it is being noticed

as a forum admin, this is a thing we do and it does work. or we just kick them for a week saying “you haven’t been as clever as you think here, we all know who you mean and you’re not allowed to personally attack people like this”

moreover, “man wins popular vote and then maintains popularity when he signs pieces of paper saying he will do the things that he said he’d do when running campaign that won the popular vote” is not really an earth-shattering headline

it gained a meme-like status for a bit because of the credulous way the Laura Ks of the world reported that “Labour are finished if she delivers on this, hard to see why we need a left wing party if this is the Tory platform”. you’ll never guess how much of it she delivered on (or was ever going to)
