Back in the mid-20th century, the FBI could place an individual under surveillance solely for being LGBTQ. This is what enabled the anti-queer witch hunts of the McCarthy era. Now, DHS permits surveillance of LGBTQ people again. Just being queer makes you a suspect. www.advocate.com/politics/dhs...

I wish that people in mainstream culture had listened to us nerds when GamerGate was happening and when the Sad/Rabid Puppy situation was going on with the Hugos. They were movements, writ small, of what is now eating my country.

Loving the posts and likes on this article! I think people would get even more out of reading it. This is no basic explainer on Gamergate. I go deep into the psychology, tactics, and limits of troll tantrums as fascist movements. www.salon.com/2025/02/24/w...

The use of "NPC" runs deep in digital alt-right communities. It's a further tie to gamergate and 4chan memeification to "own the libs." The ties to gaming language aren't accidental -- it's purposeful. Shades of Vivian James, anyone?

This commission statement refers to people with Autism, ADHD, asthma, auto-immune disease, and chronic illness as a “dire threat to the American people and our way of life”. This is a manifesto against disability. This is the language of eugenics.

Just hanging out, tracking a winter storm that's supposed to arrive when I'm trying to leave Missouri for SWPACA. Already staying the night in St. Louis to try and beat it. We'll see what happens.

Missouri's AG Andrew Bailey is suing Starbucks, arguing that its workforce is too "female" and "non-white" and as a result Missouri consumers “pay higher prices and wait longer for goods and services" because its workforce is "less qualified" This is a brazenly racist and sexist lawsuit.

this haptic display absolutely rocks. basketball is for everyone.

The entire archive of CDC datasets can be found here. HUGE shoutout to data archivists- this work is important 👏🙌🏻 archive.org/details/2025...

Genre studies of games are mostly stuck on early 2000s formalism. These 2 companion volumes push game studies toward understandings of games as 'equipment for living' and genres as located in the social and cultural conditions of their production and consumption. Coming Summer 2025!

I can normally push down my fear of flying, but it is now so much worse.

A new piece from my lab on how AI companies plundering of online content is making public interest research nigh impossible.

A thread on birthright citizenship I wrote in 2018, that unfortunately remains relevant. I always thought this was where it was all headed. Abolishing birthright citizenship for the non-white and non-rich. And why I teach on United States v. Wong Kim Ark every semester. Who was Wong Kim Ark? 1/

Now that TikTok has officially gone dark, I’m re-upping my post from a few days ago to remind folks that this praise for Trump is wrong.

I suppose the TikTok era has come to end. Whatever happens next, TikTok won't be the same. It's the end of another third space. What video is your algorithm trying to show you? Mine is a clip of "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables" from Les Mis.

Can a headline alone be eligible for a Pulitzer?

SCOTUS announces it will hear whether or not LGBTQ inclusive education is unconstitutional. Not great for LGBTQ people, and could be disastrous to teaching that we have a history and have existed alongside everyone else for centuries.

With the Tiktok ban being upheld by SCOTUS, watch gaming spaces carefully. The military labeled Tencent a military org. In the same way that only US companies can gather/sell your data because national security, only US gaming will be allowed to be intertwined with the military industrial complex.

over break, I've been dealing with healthcare. it's like my second full-time job. at least one appointment every week (sometimes four appointments a week), fighting with insurance, checking prior authorizations, phone calls... as a result, my January chickens have certainly come home to roost.

"While communities will face heatwaves, droughts and water shortages over the coming decades, this strategy locks us into pumping huge amounts of water into AI datacentres. One estimate said AI-related infrastructure may soon consume six times more water than Denmark, a country of 6 million people."

Who is your celebrity birthday twin (born the same day as you)? well, be still my broadway loving heart

this is something I've learned moving to rural Missouri. FB pages for everything. the website link on google? it's a link to FB.

. @jenguiliano.bsky.social & I are pleased to wrap up our FIFTH year publishing #ReviewsInDH with a special issue, “Games and DH,” edited by James O’Sullivan @jamesosullivan.bsky.social and Astrid Ensslin. It’s a great look at intersections of DH and Game Studies! reviewsindh.pubpub.org/v5-n12

Stardew released an update on Xbox and I can't begin to describe the stress of trying to load saves and having them crash to home or, if they load, crash when sleeping. Are my files all corrupted now? Is this just an update issue? Hold my saves in your thoughts. Just Christmas Eve gaming stress.

Think about who profits by you, personally, feeling like shit about asking for help and feeling shame for it. The rich and powerful *love* that you're making yourself more vulnerable and precarious, that you're alienating yourself from others, that organization can remain atrophied, etc.

I know academics who use AI regularly, for work and play, and I'd really like them, and universities, to tell me how they contend with AI's bottomless appetites for power and water. Is asking ChatGPT to interpret a Xmas song or making it write your syllabus worth this to you?

Women can't be powerful in games without trauma. Power is for men.

@saffista.bsky.social introduced me to curating specific playlists for an article and I don't think there's any going back to my all encompassing writing playlists. there's a vibe here.

I have several experiences from my market year as a disabled academic. One I'd like to share: In interview, I asked how the dept approaches faculty accessibility needs (much extends beyond HR; there's a culture). The search chair responded that they didn't have any accessibility needs in the dept.

I use the Black Games Archive as an excuse to buy stuff on the Steam sales that we need to collect footage of to include in the archive and if 5 or 6 other games make it into the cart that’s alright too…right? RIGHT?!? blackgamesarchive.org

I used AAT to transcribe research interviews for my diss. They were absolutely amazing.
