If this is forced by US abandonment of Global Health, it will be another tremendous loss for a field struggling to hold capacity & progress we have made. WHO departments already have inadequate staff. I hope other countries step up funding. www.theglobeandmail.com/world/articl...

Good news on a backwards policy. If it were about proximity to schools they would have been allowed to move, not be forced to close leaving people without access to this lifesaving service. www.thestar.com/news/gta/jud...

If you're writing a book on COVID interventions and dynamics outside your area of expertise, approaching it by talking to *absolutely nobody whatsoever* seems less than ideal. (From: undark.org/2025/03/07/i...)

This is the sad but true state of affairs. Many American friends have indicated the same to me. My family redirected our March break trip to New Orleans to a beautiful Canadian destination instead. #ElbowsUp

‘Letting it rip’ was a bad idea for COVID-19 and is an even worse idea for Bird Flu (whose mortality has historically been much higher). It’s concerning being next to a country with this as a public health/biosecurity strategy. www.importantcontext.news/p/the-great-...

Today is World TB Day. Tuberculosis is the leading infectious disease, killer worldwide. Still present at a rate far too high and unfair in Canada, there is a lot of work to do here and around the world. But yes, we can end TB! www.who.int/campaigns/wo...

Just launched! CPHA’s 2025 federal election factsheets are here. Get informed. Ask tough questions. Raise the bar for public health in Canada. www.cpha.ca/election-2025 #PublicHealthMatters #elxn45

An election will be held on April 28, and Canadians have made themselves clear: health care matters. Patients are asking for timely access to care. Physicians are asking for a health system that works. Read about @cmadocs.bsky.social's priorities during this election ⬇️ www.cma.ca/fightingforc...

Spring is in the air, and spring is for for hiking and enjoying the birds returning. Big kids and young - get outside, even if they need a carry part way ❤️ Measles is also in the air, get your kiddos protected if they’re not already up to date on 💉 …

The misinformation discourse is a distraction www.ft.com/content/bbc8... Odd critique as I don't know a single misinformation researcher who doesn't agree that "media fragmentation and the erosion of shared sources of truth" are massive issues. Many are studying! Parts of the SAME issue!

Foundations need to spend more, but many overestimate what they can do right now. NIH's budget is $47bn; USAID $22bn Gates' endowment is $44bn; Wellcome $49bn Spending down their entire endowments = 15 months of US spend. It's not nothing but it's far from enough. www.statnews.com/2025/03/18/c...

WHO: “8 countries now have substantial disruptions to ARV therapy and will run out of medicines in the coming months. Disruptions to HIV programmes could undo 20 years of progress, leading to more than 10 million additional cases of HIV and 3 million deaths." healthpolicy-watch.news/grim-global-...

Today is Long COVID Awareness Day. Many Canadians are still impacted by Long COVID / Post COVID Condition, more support and research is needed. It has been an honour helping with the CAN-PCC www.canpcc.ca guidelines to help with guidance for ppl affected & health care workers serving them.

#Measles cases surge in Ontario, with nearly 200 cases in past two weeks, by @kellygrant1.bsky.social www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/artic... via @theglobeandmail.com #vaccination

Sorry, Not true. The only safe and effective prevention is the vaccine. Vit A high dose in the context of micronutrient malnutrition is an important treatment to prevent measles keratitis. I’ve seen kids go blind from measles keratitis. But please don’t confuse, it doesn’t prevent.

Science is a beautiful thing

Had a discussion with a family member who didn’t get a COVID-19 vaccine but still feels the Measles vaccine is safe, effective, and necessary. A good reminder views on vaccines are not monolithic.

Having had a kid die of measles in my arms as a doctor in the DR Congo, I respectfully disagree that this would be better. Vaccines save lives. www.thedailybeast.com/rfk-jr-it-wo...

I'm old enough to remember when polio ripped through the globe and put my friends into iron lungs. We dutifully lined up at school to get vaccinated. We eradicated the disease. We protected the common good and saved lives. RFK Jr leading HHS is a disgrace.

Great opportunity to learn about heat pumps and greener home heating (and cooling) from @ptbogreenup Feb 13 Our family went to a heat pump a couple of years ago and not only less Green House Gas emissions but cheaper too! kawarthanow.com/2025/02/04/s...

I'm very excited by the opportunity to continue to serve all of our communities and bring the two incredible health units and our wonderful staff together ❤️

AI is being broadly used like a car speeding down the highway fast without functioning brakes. It’ll get there fast, but where’s it going? And why? And at what risk/cost? We need to be having societal conversations.

ICYMI, from this report, 1/4 of the more than 80,000 unhoused people, are children & youth. Tonight I was out late & saw a young person who appeared to be unhoused. Here are the last three books I’ve read to start out 2025. Taken together there’s a common antidote to current crises: love and compassion trumps hatred and aggression. We’re capable of it, but it takes practice. Here were some favourite quotes:
