Interesting research using UKBMS data for Orange-tips as a case study to test whether climate assumptions used in Species Distribution Models stand up. Check out the full paper or @rebeccalovell.bsky.social's highlights below ⬇️

Get ready for survey season! Its only a month to go until the start of UKBMS Transect surveys. Brush up on the survey method with our resources here -

Next month, we'll be at the UK Butterfly Recorders meeting where we'll be sharing the population and distribution trends for 2024, and enjoying other butterfly talks. Reserve your free place here - buff.ly/40ZdpOA

Attention UKBMS surveyors! We request that all UKBMS surveyors register on our volunteer portal called Assemble, this will give you access to lots of handy resources and greatly help us manage the 1000's of volunteers. Get your registration code here: https://buff.ly/3PlenOE. Thank you!

Butterfly Talk - Tuesday 18th Feb. Our Cambs recorder @epollard.bsky.social is giving a public talk on the butterflies of Cambs in Histon, just outside Cambridge. abbeyfields.online/events/butte...

Today is International Day of Women in Science and we celebrate all the women that help make the UKBMS happen. From walking transects, entering data, coordinating volunteers, analysing data and administering the scheme - making a real difference for Butterflies throughout the UK #WomenInScience

Sightings of butterflies are starting to trickle in - species that overwinter as adults such as Comma, Small Tortoiseshell, Peacock, Brimstone and Red Admiral can make the most of early sunny days. If you see one, do log it via the iRecord Butterflies app. https://buff.ly/3rzMS6s 📷: Jim Asher

This film traces the journey of nine White Admiral caterpillars from hatching, showcasing the whole life cycle of this iconic species (and the inspiration behind the UKBMS logo!). A lovely watch on a dull winters day to remind us of summer to come.

📊Every data point tells a story. Every volunteer adds a unique perspective. Together, we're building a more complete picture of UK #biodiversity. Find out how jncc.gov.uk/our-work/ukt... #NatureForAll #BiodiversityData #CitizenScience

It is #worldwetlandsday 🌍🌱💚 40% of all living species live or breed in wetlands and it's a vitally important habitat. In Warwickshire our stand out wetland butterfly is the Orange tip.

The video of the UK Moth Recorders meeting is now available, grab yourself a brew and watch it here - https://buff.ly/3PTy9RB There are talks on day flying moths and fascinating research into why flying insects are drawn to and circle lights, and what we can do about it #UKMRM

Happening tomorrow 7pm, book your (free) place! Online talk about the Butterflies of London, reviewing butterfly trends in the city from transect data and find out about the new atlas book - Butterflies of London. #BigCityButterflies #LNHS https://buff.ly/42sW1Tu

🦋 A new study by JNCC & @ukceh.bsky.social reveals how atmospheric #NitrogenPollution is affecting butterfly & moth populations across the UK 🔗 bit.ly/JNCCreport775 The data underpinning the study was taken from long-term monitoring schemes such as @ukbms.bsky.social, highlighting their importance.

Tomorrow is the UK Moth Recorders meeting. We are looking forward to some lepidopteran highlights from 2024. https://buff.ly/40iIjBf

This paper just out using data from the UKBMS to demonstrate different ways to think about bias in datasets.

Hear about the Supporting Science project from Butterfly Conservation, and how they are improving the verification process for butterflies and moths. (from the 2023 Why iRecord? Virtual Symposium)

Our winter newsletter is now winging its way to all UKBMS surveyors. With some snippets from last year and we start looking ahead to this season. Enjoy!

7 years of brilliant butterfly monitoring in the Austrian Tyrol, showing the value of citizen science to our understanding of the natural world

Interesting as our egg number counts generally are quite high but ours are mainly newly colonised sites where maybe the predators haven't found them yet?

The results are in from our Brown Hairstreak (Thecla betulae) egg count at Alners Gorse @savebutterflies.bsky.social reserve. Nos are almost at an all-time low, echoing dire trends in many butterflies. They have been this low before so could well bounce back 🤞🤞 @dorsetbutterflies.bsky.social

Hurray! I've just seen my first butterfly of the year: a dapper Red Admiral out in glorious sunshine at Penryn Campus. A tonic for the soul!

Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui), observed near Start Point, South Devon on 14/1.

We now have 400 followers - thank you. Our next Brown Hairstreak egg survey and training morning is this Sunday 19th hertsmiddx-butterflies.org.uk/winter-event...

New Year....New Challenge! Could you help us to run the UKBMS surveys in your area? We are looking for volunteers to help co-ordinate the volunteers that walk transects or WCBS squares in these regions - Cumbria, Devon, Upper Thames, Highlands, Kent, Lincolnshire, West Mids

One way to beat the winter blues is to go egg hunting, with 4 of our 5 hairstreaks overwintering in this stage (Green Hairstreak overwinters as a pupa). This week will see me looking for Purple Hairstreak eggs that are usually found at the base of plump oak buds on south-facing, woodland edge trees.

STOP PRESS. We have just had a record of Red Admiral in Broadstone in 2nd January. Maybe the first in the country for 2025? @richardfoxbc.bsky.social www.dorsetbutterflies.com/2025/01/firs...

2024 Butterfly Sightings for Yorkshire have now been uploaded to the yorkshirebutterflyatlas.org.uk @savebutterflies.bsky.social

An icy scene for the start of our Brown Hairstreak egg count at Alners Gorse @savebutterflies.bsky.social reserve. Numbers quite low but saw my first ever triple eggs (they are normally laid singly far apart!). Full results soon @dorsetbutterflies.bsky.social

Just found this slo-mo clip from April 2022, filmed on the edge of Northfield Wood, Suffolk. Looking out the window and counting the days! @bc-suffolk.bsky.social @savebutterflies.bsky.social #orangetipbutterfly #butterflies

Anyone got any butterfly records from Cambridgeshire from 2024 that they still want to share? I am going to start processing the data on Friday, so please get them to me ASAP. @bc-cambs-essex.bsky.social @bc-suffolk.bsky.social @savebutterflies.bsky.social

Despite a heavy frost it was a very successful Brown Hairstreak training/survey morning with 28 eggs found around Stafford Road Open Space Ruislip. Everyone found at least one egg! @savebutterflies.bsky.social Thanks to Nick for leading the event! The next event will be on Sun 19th at Horsenden Hill

#butterflymonth #vlindermaand day 13 Purple hairstreak Widespread but often overlooked. Now is the time to find the eggs near flowering buds of oaks. Rate of success in finding eggs is often inversely related to the age of those searching... I need reading glasses nowadays to have some success...

Five Purple Hairstreak eggs on one Oak tree bud cluster. I've never found more than 5 together, anyone else? FYI these were found whilst I was undertaking scrub management on a Suffolk heathland site (removal of some Oaks included). The eggs were saved & translocated or reared by volunteers.

Beat the winter blues with our programme of free Zoom talks. Starting this Wed 8th Jan with 'Colombia - home to 20% of the world's butterfly species' with Ian Small. Full details are here & note earlier start time: www.hertsmiddx-butterflies.org.uk/winter-zoom....

To echo this, we would like to thank all the people who coordinate data for the European Butterfly Monitoring Scheme who are critical to our understanding of butterfly trends in Europe and give us a unique glimpse into the critical world of insects and pollinators

Today at UKBMS HQ we are appreciating the work of the 70+ volunteer Transect Coordinators and WCBS Champions. They help to keep thousands of surveyors informed and engaged and help us to run the scheme. We thank you! Find your local Coordinator here -

A Happy New Year to all our followers. May it be filled with butterflies and moths. Remember we have lots of events coming up this year, the first being a Brown Hairstreak egg count at Alners Gorse on 11 Jan. Booking essential www.dorsetbutterflies.com/events/

When will the first butterfly of 2025 be sighted in Suffolk? In 2024 a Peacock was seen on 3rd Jan. (This photo taken on 1st Feb by Carl Buttle)

As we wrap up the year – we want to say a big THANK YOU to everyone who supported UKBMS this year. It is an outstanding achievement with the real heroes being the thousands of dedicated volunteers who give their time to monitor butterflies. Thank you one and all! 👏 👏 👏
