Thanks David. To be honest, I’ve come to expect it on the streets in recent years. Small incidents like these pale in comparison to what trans people face all the time, and the kind of bigotry expressed at anti-immigrant protests, which is horrific. You’re right RE: lack of ambition from gov.

This is a useful conversation on the @irishtimes.com In The News podcast about homophobia and transphobia in contemporary Ireland.

Yeah, and I think it would do much more than provide new homes for people, because it could bring a lot of life to areas that are empty outside of working hours. Good for city life, local businesses, etc.

Yes, they should absolutely be doing this. Any entity with office buildings that would be easier to convert to homes should be incentivised to move to contemporary offices, IMO. Especially those Georgian buildings, which were housing once upon a time!

Yep, saw that. But ultimately I think the task is more with the LDA than councils. Pretty much unviable to convert many of those contemporary buildings I've listed, but the sites could be used.

It's extremely challenging to refurbish contemporary office blocks for housing, much easier with older blocks, but there are clearly great deals in some commercial property rn. Given the need for housing in Dublin city centre, it's a pity that these sites apparently can't be redeveloped for homes.

Median age of Irish-born people living in Australia is 43, and two thirds are Australian citizens (as per their 2021 census, I don’t have more up to date data). So like so much emigration, the “I’ll just stay for a couple of years” doesn’t exactly pan out that way. (Lots of it does, obviously.)
