I'll be chatting at Six Impossible Things Before Breakfast at Viernulvier in Ghent, March 6th, tickets here:

There's no doubt that money wasted on an Arts Council IT system that never went anywhere needs to be investigated. But can government then look how on earth the Dept of Social Protection paid an average of €1.4 million a week to private contractors for IT services, 2023 - 2024? €126.51 million.

I am grateful (and I truly mean it) that he actually wrote down in print their exact stupid, feckless strategy. Jeffries and Schumer would never openly say this (but this is their strategy.)

Blue Road -The Edna O'Brien Story has now exceeded 100k euros at the Irish box office. It's a lot for an Irish documentary on so few screens in 2 weeks + we know it's all due to word of mouth from our audiences and Edna herself. Irish cinemas below with new screens in Dundrum, Cork + Ranelagh 💙

Politicians accusing other politicians of being politicians is one of my favourite politician ouroboroses.

I spoke to Radie Peat and Dan Lambert last week about the nightmare of negotiating Ireland's autism services for their 3-year-old daughter. Huge thanks to them both for sharing their experience, so many other families are facing the same impossible struggle. www.irishtimes.com/health/2025/...

Remember the 2008 joke “what’s the difference between Ireland & Iceland?” The 2024 version would be Ireland & Greenland, & the difference is that our FDI dependency gives the memelords extraordinary power over us I’m in the paper today - shouldn’t be paywalled www.irishtimes.com/opinion/2025...

New Year column: the positions Ireland takes internationally when standing up for the oppressed, matter. Ireland can make the world a better place. But for such stances to have integrity, Irish society must also reflect on homegrown nihilism and confront Irish racism.

Wrote about how 2024 represented a crescendo of Irish pop culture and art, Peak Ireland, and the irony that exists in the space between the global impact of Irish creativity and how the lived experience of those creating art in Ireland is often a struggle. www.irishtimes.com/opinion/2024...

This mess is *entirely* of Labour’s own making In opposition they promised to end sleaze and tighten money in politics. They could have laid out plans for this as soon as they got into office Instead they prevaricated. And this is the outcome. So depressing www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

I spent the past year writing weekly on emerging, alternative and experimental art in and of Ireland. Here’s what I learned.

Great reporting here.

On the Irish language revival, I wrote this piece a couple of years ago for the New York Times on some artists I felt were pushing the language forward in popular culture. Truly remarkable to witness the journeys An Cailín Ciúin and Kneecap have been on since then. An incredible era for Gaeilge.

Kneecap make two Academy Award shortlists; International Feature Film, and Music (Original Song).
