This is an outrageous policy change. Also, if you’re gonna do this then you gotta do it for drivers, too right? Given those are obviously far far more dangerous vehicles. nyc.streetsblog.org/2025/05/02/p...

This is the story of a pathological liar who was immunized by the Supreme Court, is drunk on power and thinks a journalist should not confront his obvious lies. It’s all there in a two-minute exchange about an obviously fabricated photo. www.americaamerica.news/p/trumps-ris...

Holy shit. I knew this @nytimes.com editorial would be bad, but it's so much worse than I could have imagined. I mean, it is indistinguishable from a parody of reactionary centrism. This is every center-left pathology, laid out for your examination.

Just to be clear, this is a violation of the fundamental ethical principle in clinical trial design called "equipoise." Equipoise means that no-one is exposed to excess risk just to test the therapy. That's specifically *why* vaccine trials don't use placebo arms. Ethical violation as POLICY.

I could be wrong about this but I really think most Americans do not want to be forced to “do their own research” about food & drug & product safety and would rather that the government agencies that have been sorting that all out for them for decades not be obliterated in the name of “efficiency.”

Dear god let this man cook.

Most points scored in the 4th quarter in the postseason since Jalen Brunson signed with the Knicks: 1. Jalen Brunson: 248 points (in 26 games) 2. Nikola Jokic: 241 points (in 36 games) 3. Jayson Tatum: 233 points (in 38 games) "The Knicks don't have a 1A dude"

4th quarter this series: Jalen Brunson: 53 points on 65% shooting 8 assists vs. 1 turnover +25 plus/minus Cade Cunningham: 26 points on 35% shooting 10 assists vs. 8 turnovers -15 plus/minus "Cunningham is the best player in the series."

Complete list of all players to average more than 33 points, 8 assists and 4 rebounds while shooting above 45% from the floor and 80% from the FT line over the first four playoff games in any postseason in NBA history: Michael Jordan and Jalen Brunson -- end of list --

Sounds like it’s a mistake to leave public goods in the hands of billionaires who can decide at any moment they’re bored and don’t want to support them anymore bsky.app/profile/clar...

1. @alisongopnik.bsky.social, Cosma Shalizi, James Evans and myself have a new piece in Science on "AI" Large Models, pushing back against much of the collective wisdom about what they can and can't do. Official below, unpaywalled at henryfarrell.net/large-ai-mod... . So why this now?

Our cover this week.

Hamas captivity survivor Eli Sharabi, whose wife and two daughters were murdered during the October 7, 2023, Hamas massacre, shares powerful words from Auschwitz on Holocaust Memorial Day.

“I am sort of open to an entirely unrealistic idea that requires an absolutely 100% fucking impossible logistical scenario and would require 340 million people to have a small object with them at all times or else they could be shipped to El Salvador”

“The EU bans those synthetic food dyes” is just misinformation pushed by ignoramuses like RFK who don’t care about facts & lie to you for their own profit. None of these synthetic food dyes are banned in the EU Red 40 = E129 Yellow 5 = E102 Yellow 6 = E110 Blue 1 = E133 Blue 2 = E132 Green 3 = E143

Not to put too fine of a point on this, but if I spent the last few months putting innocent people in concentration camps and the pope died basically three seconds after I met him, I would not continue life apace, I would not immediately clock back in at the fascism factory.

“Why do we even plan on doing great things if, on a whim, we can just decide ‘nah’?” the senior space scientist says. “These things take a generation to build and enable multiple generations of scientists. They should not be blithely thrown away.” www.scientificamerican.com/article/nasa...

This headline construction could apply to nearly anyone in the Trump 2.0 administration. "The EPA Head Who Hates the Environment." "The HHS Secretary Who Hates Science-Based Medicine." "The Education Sec. Who Hates Education." "The President Who Hates Democracy." The nihilism is a throughline.

Staple this to RFK Jr’s forehead.

“They showed me terrible videos and told me that my mother was captured, and that Israel didn’t exist anymore.” “When I cried, they put a gun to my head and told me to be quiet.” — Released hostage Eitan Yahalomi, 12

PA voted for Trump, and UAW endorsed Trump, now Mack Truck is laying off workers at their Lehigh County plant with tariff as a significant cause. https://www.reddit.com/r/LeopardsAteMyFace/comments/1k2gbp0/pa_voted_for_trump_and_uaw_endorsed_trump_now/

If you think you can't make a political issue out of "people shouldn't be grabbed off the street and put in a foreign gulag forever," maybe consider getting out of politics/punditry. And these aren't technical slogans: they appear in the Declaration of Independence and in the Constitution (twice).

AOC: When he talks about rapists and criminals, he should look in the mirror

Trump's EPA just moved to reverse state and local bans on toxic "forever chemicals" that can lead to birth defects and cancer.  So much for "Make America Healthy Again." https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2025/apr/05/trump-pfas-toxic-forever-chemicals

Just an astonishingly stupid person.

No matter how many times Republicans say otherwise, there is *no way* they can pay for their tax cuts for the rich without gutting healthcare and food assistance for the poor — along with other programs that millions of people rely on. Don't believe their lies for a second.

If I have my numbers right, the cost of Trump's self-fellating parade would be enough money for PEPFAR to give HIV prevention treatment to nearly two million people.

This continues to be the biggest story in the country: DOGE has already squandered half a trillion dollars in 6 weeks. Not billion. half a trillion, $500 billion talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/irs-p...

In just two months, DOGE has —lost— the government an estimated half a trillion dollars. I propose that Musk pay it back personally.

Bro took one look at the stock market and said "pay me in Canadian dollars please!"

None of this damage by Trump or Musk would be possible without the full and unwavering support of the Republican Party. This is like pretending that the problem with the Civil War was that Jefferson Davis thought too much of himself.

it’s weird that we’re staring down the second unprecedented economic catastrophe in five years and instead of a novel coronavirus that will go on to kill millions of people this one is just “no one was willing to tell him no”

"Vanilla is in vanilla ice cream and what else?" is such a perfect encapsulation of the surly self-confidence of the people who are ripping the wires out of our government and our economy.
