I would say he loses the Keyblade in KH1 and can still cast so I think he learns magic innately traveling with Donald and learning from Merlin. He forgets it in KH2 and has to relearn it. Keyblades do augment physical and magical ability of their wielders and they are used as a conduit for casting!

I’m glad @poppykeaton.bsky.social tagged me in this, I feel the same way you do about the games, 3 especially came at a pivotal point in my life when I was at my lowest. These games helped me in some of the darkest times in my life, and that’s what makes loving something beautiful.
